Most recent construction of NZL-32 (ClaudioD design) after fine tuning is ready & in training to for Italian IACC 120 Cup regatta coming up Oct 1-2, 2011 in Ravenna, yesterday was low wind day so took opportunity to take few pics.

Alan,
hope will be fast as it is a beauty !!
Cheers
ClaudioD

Thanks Claudio … I believe she is fast enough so it’s really all about sailing skill now, have been using tell tales to help learn the finer details of sail settings etc, very interesting exercise in learning :graduate:

Cheers Alan

Just a picture…

Mike

…just a picture? just a wonderfull picture!!!

That pic just reminded me of how much I need to see the sea again :frowning:

Sorry Gravitar,
I resized the picture to enhance the nice boat and discovering that is the NZL92 !
If you disagree, I will remove it of course!
ClaudioD

No Problem Claudio, both crops have their merit!

From the same session

Experimanting with slowing things down. First part of the viedo is 1/4 speed, then you see the same at full speed.

The 1/4 speed seems a lttle more real, especially the dive into the wave just before the tack.

I’m thnking maybe 1/2 or 1/3 would be better… Any opinions?

Mike

I agree Mike, is more realistic !

I don’t know what camera you’re running, but if you can try double the frame rate to 60 FPS (that’s if you can on an hd camera) or 50 FPS if you’re in a PAL country.
That will help drop the juddering on the waves that you can see when you lower the speed. I believe they run it at half speed on sets for movies, particularly on the close-up bow shots to give the water that look of weight. They would be using film tradidtionally which gives a super smooth feel when messing with frame rates (although that would be running at only 24 fps… stupidest format war in the history of technology and it still continues today)

Useless info for anyone who’s interested

Cheers

The construction of the unique 2 Magic Urca AC120 prototypes is ongoing.
Information will be posted on my internet site and on the Barone Rosso Italian forum starting from these links:

Bye for the final images of the Magic Urca AC120

some new ac100 extreme…

WoW, that’s really impressive, both the design and building.

One question though, how do you make the keel (and rudder) the forum description was not really clear (or I did not really understand it, maybe missing too much background information?)

Thank you and keep us posted …

Hi Gio,
I answer you but I hope not going too much OT… if you’d like to write something about, I think that could be better opening another topic.

The fin and rudder are described in this post for lamination schemes and so on :
http://www.baronerosso.it/forum/navimodellismo-vela/234966-magic-urca-ac120-studi-di-forme-e-sistemi-costruttivi-ispirati-iacc-e-ac100-24.html#post2898878

The Swanze Castoldi method developed and utilized, is a TD-Model property (www.tdmodel.com) and I’m not authorized to describe it in detail. In few concepts, it is a system of molding that utilize Plexiglas molds, hi pressure and a particular sequence; the result is a very light and stiff composite piece.
Anyway the stiff/weight result could be better but similar to a normal molded (well) AC120 fin: quite 130 grams with a maximum deflection of 12 mm at the max charge (2,85kg) with fin maintained horizontally , see

Bye

Yes, without going to much OT, I understood the “property” issues/problems, but just to be clear, there has to be a carved plexiglass mold (CNC made?), right?

I will also keep looking in the barone rosso forum for further clarifications … but maybe a separate discussion topic on this subject should be in order!

EDIT:, I’m answering myself: Yes there is a CNC plexigalss mold (From Claudio’s post: " In few concepts, it is a system of molding that utilize Plexiglas molds, hi pressure and a particular sequence; the result is a very light and stiff composite piece…"). Next time I will read the post better, more accurately, before starting a discussion, I promise!

Hi ClaudioV, beautiful construction, I wanted to ask with the recent Italian IACC 120 rules changes, did your Urca AC 120 manage to stay within the new rules ?

Cheers Alan

Hi Alan,
How I wrote here…

They will accept mine only 2 boats with this “design” because they give me “erroneusly” the permission to do them and I started construction before di last changing of the rules( accordingly to the rule B.1.2) that put my design out for the point 2.2.2 g.

So only 2 Magic Urca AC120 will born and after I’ll throw my project in the garbage been for the italian AC120 (not for the other AC100:rolleyes: not for who don’t care about new rule in point 2.2.2 g;)).
What a pity!

Bye
