Americas cup gossip

Great Vid about NZ Mij :smile3: but like the rest of the world you Aussie’s still don’t get it, do you !? … Yes we do-not have an Airforce, Navy or Army to speak & most Kiwi’s are really proud of that, I am anyway.

NZ Government does not put hard earned tax dollars into military technology … but into our sport teams with the likes of $40 million sponsorship into ETNZ to help win the Americas Cup !!! … far better investment in our eyes mate :stuck_out_tongue:

that makes it easier to understand the hows and why. thanks for the link..

Imagine what this year’s defender would be like if the US gubmint did that!

Imagine an AC72 that weighs 234 LBs., goes on it’s own at about 90 kts downwind and 50 kts upwind, using solar power for the hydraulics, and the crew gets to sit in nice loungers on shore with computer screens in front of them.

Oh and there’s HQ’s view on what’s happening too !

Thank Mr. Jack Griffin over at www.cupexperience.com for the real poop on things AC34. He and his people are responsible for putting out the race viewers so we can follow (and enjoy?) the racing as it’s happening.

They should have Mr. Griffin doing all the technology videos for the TV networks, instead on those so-called in-house “experts.” He can explain things in a straight-forward way that doesn’t insult a knowledgeable yachtsman’s intelligence, like the TV networks do, with their dumbed-down, blubble-headed-blonde, PC explanations.

In fact, there should be a 1/2 hour show just on the AC34 itself, starting with the challenge, the AC72 rule, and the evolution of it and the boats, the two tragedies, plus a serious synopsis of the LVC competition. All with a somewhat technical attitude, and without all the WOW videos of “flying” boats, which we are all mostly tired of seeing by now.

OK, maybe a little WOW stuff at the end.

HAHAHAHA.

The subtitles were good, especially the part about, “everyone involved in the scandal leave the room…” Too bad that bunker scene thing is getting a little old.

Here’s an idea…

If it’s supposed to be “match racing” and LR got their boat design from NZ, then for the next AC, one boat builder gets to build ALL the hulls, like we do in the one-design classes. I kinda like the old rule where the boat design, builder, crew, etc. has to come from the challenger’s or defender’s country, but that might scare off even more competitors. At the least, the crew should be from the same country.

that would be my part

:biglaugh:

All the team members should be from the country the team is registered in instead of being too open with teams throwing money at people to join them - a real danger of becoming a bit like the football teams !

That’s a good idea to make the competition truly international, but some countries may not have that many yachtsmen, like Nepal or Alaska.

forgive my ignorance but do Nepal even have a sailing team in any class ?

yup JK is gone to feather duster !!!

Alan, humour aside, I couldn’t agree more. (Although, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility the NZ navy might be planning a fleet of Stealth AC72s :D)

brilliant start by DB and drag race now to gate 2… brilliant

differential in speed gain upwin for ETNZ was not that significant in race 6 but it is much greater as the wind increase in race 7

Does anyone want to buy some slightly used Oracle souvenirs?

:what: Sorry … I don’t keep up with news lately, but last I knew was that Alaska is a U.S. state (not a country) …did you lose it in a war or something ? The U.S does have “top” yachtsmen, they’re just not Americans

The fat lady is putting on her AC make-up

Another American becomes a Feather Duster …could not have happened to a better guy.

Where have you been…She’s had the make up on since race 2 She’s been warming up in the wings ever since…

ETNZ is beatable…but only if the stars align… but other wise, Barker doesn’t need to win the start… heck he can spot em 10-15 seconds… no worries of any fouls. on the upwind leg he’ll just sail by…

Nice article about the cup and Artemis on Bloomberg news.
You can read it here:

Thanks Gio!

'The boat ripped across the bay chop to nearby St. Francis Yacht Club. ’

A bear away at an ebb tide with a 18 knots breeze!

Same conditions as with the OTUSA capsize and the ETNZ nosedive!

Next week they expect ebb-tide conditions (if OTUSA gains some points so far)
