just watched the first 2 races and JS is very agressive looking for the penalty where DB is more interested in sailing their own race. so ETNZ 2 vs OR -2 then
very good racing on race 1 didn’t think the americans would be that close to the pace of ETNZ - it’s only the start so let’s see what race 3&4 gives us
After ETNZ loosing 2 of their crews during one of the race of the LVC against LR during a bare away at the weather gate in a spectacular nose dive, it is OR turn to loose one of their crew during a tack :
kiwis up 2-0… but i realy think the first race was the best… when oracle was dammaged for the second race. i dont think close…
my take…
oracle is faster down wind by a little… and the kiwis are faster up wind… by alot
by take… oracle will not catch the kiwis… i will give a race to oracle but not much more… kiwis win it… 8-3
giving the kiwis a break down twice
race 3 & 4 is what I call match racing in foiling cats. I’m still not sure if a 5- leg course is the best way to do it, but it’s a best-of-17? so that might make it about as fair as possible… for now.
I’m sure that OR has the advantage of speed, however small it seems, so it will come down to the helm, and how well the crew works. That plus a little luck, but I don’t believe in luck (I’m not superstitious.)
They didn’t mention what the ‘damage’ to Oracle’s wing was.
on saturday they had some sort of a tear or a hole in the mylar film covering the wing. they sent a crew aloft with some duct tape to make a repair between race 1 and 2.
not sure about the whole speed differential. according to the data on the race in race 3 Or had an average speed of .05 knots faster and sailed .4 NM further and in race 4 OR had a higehr average speed of by .07 knots. and they both sailed the same distance in race 4.
the key is that NZ seems to be more fluid and smooth from the crew standpoint…
Spithill and crew are getting it together, now he just has to learn you can’t slam tack a multi like a mono with out losing a ton of time but he is getting there.
