… Yes, not a multihull, they want to keep the worldwide pre-AC multi race format/series like the AC45 cats, but with only one hull. From what Bertelli said it seems that they are already started to design the new boat, so no repeat of this year attempt by LR.
i would love for them to go back to the iacc boats… I still say there is more there… there is more there the design to learn… has anybody every thought of twinn rudders on the boats? with the iacc boats. you would have more of them out there for countries to use… and then start with sail design . and alot more . not just 4 countries…
everybody knew this americas cup .
it was kiwis vs oracle… even before the first race was sailed
yes, please, make the boats more complex and more expensive… such that only a few of the very rich could play. and more likely to break and have stupid ting like wind limits…
lets build a bunch of the Vesta Sail rockets and have drag races…
even better, you want simple, and you want foiling… stick spittles and barkers fat ass in this…and see who wins…
gotta love the Laser…
Oracle fined 250,000 bucks, and is now 2 points in the hole before they even race as a result of the ACWS cheating. and a few a people are kicked out from the AC all together…
They must think Oracle is that good, that they need to win more than is necessary? Or does the ‘International Jury’ just want the Cup to go to NZ anyway? From what I know of the AC team financing, the fine ought to be enough, and not letting them in the next ACWS is even worse than the fine, but I’d like to see their reasoning for putting Oracle two points in the hole before the finals even start.
“The ruling comes following a jury probe into illegal weights added to Oracle Team USA’s 45-foot catamaran, the boat they used during the America’s Cup World Series, a collection of races last year meant to drum up attention to this year’s America’s Cup. The Oracle team was accused of — and later admitted to — adding about five pounds of illegal weight to their 3,086-pound boat.”
At 3,086 lbs. - That calculates out to about 68 1/2 lbs. per foot of boat length !
Come’on Dick …if a IOM is found to be 5 grams overweight after winning world championship what should the result be ? I think everyone agree’s on the out of AC 45 class ruling.
But the AC is not normal, it just gets funnier daily….O.R waste potential teams financial resources by imposing on potential teams the ACWS with the AC 45 circus, effectively eliminating potential teams from AC 34 because it becomes too expensive.
Then the winning ACWS team O.R become losers and ETNZ become the winners, when they never won on the AC45 racing ! …o.k rules are rules and that’s the penalty for breaking the rules… finished done and dusted.
Then to impose an additional -2 point penalty on the AC 72’s before the AC has started just lacks common sense !!! what have the AC45’s got to do with AC72’s ….eh two different class boats
Just imagining now a possible scenario of ETNZ getting to 9 points at the time when OR have won 10 races (it would never happen right?) then the IJ ACWS ruling of -2 points would have ETNZ win the AC34, when they would otherwise have lost it on the water (again)….If I were on the ETNZ team I would not be happy winning AC34 this way, is this the intention of the IJ ruling ? (just dumb) ….In any other scoring scenario the -2 point penalty will made no difference to the result.

It not that they added five pounds of illegal weight. All boats were told to add varying amounts of weight to keep all boats equal in weight as several boats had to have repairs made. IE keep the one design equal…
Its all about WHERE they placed the weight. They did not put the extra weight where they were to TOLD to place it.
This would be the equivalent of the IOM rules telling you to use an aluminum mast, but you decide to use a carbon mast…Flagrant rules violation
Not sure I totally agree with the -2 points. But it all depends on how the rules were written to include the ACWS.
There are plenty of sporting events where if you are caught cheating you could be banned from participating the Championship…
That is all totally correct. If get caught cheating after you win the championship, it is appropriate and normal to be stripped of your award. Then, if the circumstances warrant, you can be fined, disallowed to compete the next time, or both.
For example, if you were crowned Miss America, and violated some rules of ethics, then you would lose your crown, but not sentenced to six months in a drug rehab program or remedial driving school.
So if Oracle did indeed add “too much” weight to the AC45 boat, they should lose any awards or be fined, and possibly denied the next series (what they did wasn’t that bad), but it shouldn’t have to affect their efforts with the AC72s.
I also thought that the ACWS was an un-associated event. I figured it was meant to help the potential AC72 teams learn teamwork, sail handling, catamaran tactics, etc. For example, they keep talking about how Ben Ainlsie for Chris Draper won gold medals(in monohulls, I presume) but how did they learn to drive the big cat, if they didn’t ssstart out with a smaller one. Even with the smaller boats, there were some significant collisions, and you definitely wouldn’t want to spear the committee boat with a multi-million dollar 72…
At the most, they should be ordered to pay for extra judges or Cup officials to go over the AC72 to make sure that boat is compliant with all the AC72 rules.
This decision by the International Jury is very much unfair not only to the AC teams, but to the sport, and the Cup itself. I suppose they’ll ban Oracle from next year’s Indianapolis 500??
I hear ya… it is possible that the ACWS rules, ect. were linked in with the AC34 rules. and the participants knew in advance that gross misconduct could result in penalty affecting the AC34…
I don’t claim to know i’m just guestimating…
Tom what they did WAS that bad. they were told to add weight, and they were told specifically where to put it… not only did they add MORE weight, they added in the wrong place. Their boats were no longer in compliance with the rules.
“The fact is, we didn’t comply with the rules,” Coutts said. “It doesn’t matter whether it helps you or not. If it doesn’t comply with the rules, your boat’s out of measurement and you have to withdraw.”
Coutts claim by adding the weight were they did, had no performance gain…The why do it. why not put the weight where they told you to put it?
As I understood the ‘weight-gate’, it was about a reinforced and prolonged king-post (and therefore an overweighted part) to achieve a much more rigid platform. :what:
Nothing else would make sense.
Not only did they add weight, but they lengthened the kingpost some amount. It was known that the center spine of that particular boat was bent or warped some amount due to rig tension, and presumably a longer kingpost would give a little leverage to straighten it under the same tension. But being longer, you could also get more forestay tension than other boats with shorter kingposts.
We will probably see one boat dominate the series, so the 2 point deficit probably won’t make any difference.
I hope we will see some video coverage of the Little America’s Cup of the C Class cats. All of the technology, but being managed by only two crew, these boats are at the cutting edge also
race on… gonna be a good one…
I propose a drinking game… chug a beer every time one of the announcers mentions the americans being down 2 points…
I couldn’t handle that Marc. OTOH, I could use it as an excuse when I shoot the guy? (There are no Twinkies in my house.)
I swear the announcer is jinxing OR every time he says that stuff. Is there a way we can get him to shut up? It should be said, if at all, once, at the beginning of the day’s broadcast, and that’s IT.
HOW UN-AMERICAN.
If that guy had the same attitude during a Costa Rican football match, he wouldn’t make it home alive.
At long last, Great sailing !! thank goodness Ainslie was not helming O.R … may have been different outcome
I second that I also said that they should have stick with the AC45 which I thought were brilliant and got more teams interested instead of doing once again a cup of fat wallet instead of skilled sailors. Don’t get me wrong these AC72 are very impressive and they’re breaking so many boundaries in sailing but they’re simply too expensive.
Bringing the sailing closer to the shore was a brilliant idea to increase the viewing and spectacle to the public and should be kept but I they had a good formula with the AC45, bringing great racing as they all had the same platform and so the sailors made the biggest difference and having more teams is more interesting. Here the LVC was just a formality and I feel the AC will too !
Nonetheless for this ocassion as I am gonna stick to my gun I said months ago which is ETNZ to win !
I only hope that they’ll bring it back to more affordable package for the AC35
LOL let’s get ready then :zbeer:
