Anyone here sailed or built their own vanquish. Its going to be the boat I am buildingstarting in a couple of days and was curious if anyone had any feedback. Thanks alot.

I was planning on using the MDF plug method and making a mold rather than planking. Thanks for the input. I am only mildly interested in how it sails as there are not many IOM in my area. Im just looking for a boat to build that will have value to other people if i decide to sell. Andrew Miller

I have a question pertaining to this boat. I was thinking about building this one, but US1M is more common in my area. Will a IOM boat keep up with an US1M, or am I better off with a different design?

Down here we don’t have the US1M, but from time to time there are discussions about performance differences between the two on this site and others. You’ll also find that some clubs around the US have mixed fleets where an IOM or two sails against a few US1M.

The key difference is that the IOM is a more powerful boat. It’s heavier (by as much as 3lb over the lightest US1Ms) and has a larger sail area. The light weight of the US1M will mean it accelerates more quickly and, potentially makes it the faster boat in light and flukey breezes (as is common in many US locations). The weight and power of the IOM will give it the edge in the stronger breezes. If you look at the results where they race the two together - you’ll see they mix it up quite well. So it depends on conditions and skill.

Of course you can make an IOM fit the US1M rules by changing the rig. However in most conditions, an IOM with a US1M rig will not be competitive against most US1M.

Others will have the first hand experience of both classes (I own an IOM - not a US1M). And of course I’ve ignored design differences within the two classes. But the reality is that an IOM set up to class rules will weigh at least 8.8lbs, while even the heavier US1M designs, such as the Mistral, a no more than 7.5 lbs.

Well, started building mine this weekend. How’s it look.

Ok, it appears I do not know how to post a pic.

Ok, here we go try this.

I emailed the PIC.

Ok, now I?m really depressed, I did the glassing with epoxy last night and it didn?t turn out not so good, or should I say bad. I have a lot of experience in planking, but not in glassing. I used 30 min A/B with a bit of alcohol. It?s a bit wavy now. It was perfectly smooth before I started. I?m like really down and out right now. Is there a chance it could be fixed. Think it would take a week of sanding to get it all off. Kind of depressing, I built it in one weekend and it will take long to sand it down than to start over.

Jeremi,

My personally opinion, would be to plank another hull, because it will take a lot of time to sand all the epoxy and glass of, and even then, I don?t think the hull will be as fair as it originally was.

How did you apply the epoxy to the hull?

I just realized who “dansherman” is.

Here is an email that I sent to “dansherman”

Crap, if I have to start over, I think maybe I should practice on something else for a few weeks. Maybe a round piece of wood or something.

I started with a squeegee (foam brush), but after I was about 60% done the brush started to come apart (small pieces started coming off) so I then switched to a regular brush, because I did not have another foam one. I didn?t realize till you asked me, but the part done with the squeegee looks much better than the rest. Most all the bad spots are on the sides.

Jeremi,

I sent you an e-mail about applying the epoxy. If you want, you can post you?re your questions, here, that way others can chime in, and other can also benefit from the information sharing.

Sounds good to me, and maybe in a few weeks if anyone is in the Ventura, CA area that wants to supervise I would be grateful. For that matter I can come to them as well.

Well cleaned up the shadows, cut the #1 and #21 shadows again, got it all ready to go by dinner time. After dinner I got 17 planks on before I ran out of wood. Well, got a good start.
