Can anyone point me to a good forum for scale model shipbuilding. I found this FAQ
http://home.att.net/~ShipModelFAQ/Contents.html
but I can’t seem to find the list it belongs to. I would prefer one that isn’t Yahoo as I find them cumbersome to use.

Thanks

I checked the Delphi forums and nothing there. Yahoo is a pain at times

Have you started the new schooner yet? Any photos?

TWO part question here

Since we are discussing scale sail and items that fall with in this topic. Just wondering how and if others make their blocks?

Seen some nice ones listed made by Pekabe. They run from $9.30 to 12.35 (usd)each, Looking at the plans for a schooner (Latham) the price of just the blocks would really put a lot of us out of the building really fast. But wonder is there a way to make your own. And how you do it.

The other part of the question is
Are blocks needed or would Bowies work? If a person is not competeing in a scale model event but building to sail the bowies would work I think. Most people looking at the schooner sailing would not know that there are items missing.

It would be interesting to have a subsection with in the scale sail topic to cover making of items for the boats. Cougar tried this in another area but not a lot of responce.

Don, I clicked on your picture in your album and it would not come up.

Try uploading your picture again and this time rename your picture so there is no spaces in your name. Sometime the (img)(/img) doesn’t work if you have spaces or “%” in the file name.

Rcher
I think you were looking at the wrong photo. The picture’s name is boat.jpg and I copied and pasted it there -no spaces,no numbers.

Jeff,

The Pekabe blocks are working blocks with ball bearings and so on. I would suspect that you probably do not have that many working blocks above deck. I have seen pretty nice looking “fake blocks” at our local hobby shop that would vie a scale appearance to all of your non-working rigging. I would only use the Pekabe if you plan on having working blocks above deck and you want them to have a scale appearance.

Your hull looks good!!

Yeah, there was something weird going on with www.rcsailing.net album but I decided back away very slowly and not to fool around with it.

DOn

OH MY OH MY looking good!!!

WOW Don you are doing a great job on the hull. Post more pictures if you have time and if the rcsailing forum co operates.
Can you explain how your building board is set up,from the photo it looks like you have it set up differently then how the shadow forms and building board are in the building of us1m.

Also is the keel added after you planked the hull?

Thanks an great work

Ok I know your working on a schooner. So your turn to post pictures of what you got done.

I know I am doing this also( builting Benjamine Latham)…But lucky me I have not done much except draw out the forms damn work and family life takes up to much time lately. So Pictures of a sheet of paper with lines on it is not worth posting. Would like to see how it is going Cougar.

Thanks

Jeff
The building board is set the same as the US1M insructions but I hold the shadows in place with a screw through the board. They are much easier to remove and you can pull the shadows out one at a time rather than trying to pry the boat off. I cut slots in the bottom of the shadows and laid the keel in them. I attached the keel to the building board but not to the shadows. Easier removal. I wanted the keel to hold everthing in line and it is also wide enough to allow me to cut a slot for the keel trunk without risking the hull going SPROOOIINNG!! It went quite well although next time I would taper all the planks. I am really in a quandry about the finish. All the Fife boats I have seen so far have a white hull.I went very carefully on the planking with the intention of leaving them exposed. I really hate to cover those pretty planks with white paint. How Scale does one have to be?

Don, I’ve seen quite a few restored schooners at the harbor that were just painted w/antifouling below the waterline and bright coated (clearcoated) above the waterline. I don’t know which particular schooner you’re modeling but it wouldn’t look out of line.

Don

“How scale does one have to be”
Good question and I think the simple answer is HOw scale do you want it? And as Rcher stated some do show the wood planking. And your hull would be a shame to cover it in white paint.
So many times a beautiful piece of wood is covered in thick paint. Doing wood carvings I see this all the time, I prefer a light wash of paint to still showe the wood grain. As for the hulls I have built I decided that none will be fully covered in paint. The wood looks so much more pleasing. And I have decided my schooner will NOT have a painted hull. Red Cedar planking is not to be covered. IMHO

And thanks for discribing you shadow/building board set up

Greetings

Ok for those of us just starting into the “scale sail” field or in building boats I wonder if the “old hands” can reccomend any good books about construction of sailboats/ships wether static or R/C.

I do have the US1M manual which has some great tips and points within its pages. Also have a book titled “Ship Modeling from Scrath” by Edwin B. Leaf(isbn 0-07-036817-1) again some good to great info on building. Are there other books a person should be looking at?

Jeff

Well I’m not an old hand but I have a copy of “Planking Techniques for Model Ship Builders” by Donald Dressel (ISBN 0-8306-2868-1) that I have found usful.

Thanks
