There are pro’s and cons. The user group format does allow files and links to be more conveniently accessed, though it’s not as good for general chit-chats on specific topics as here or other forums.
The answer is to ask here for the specific advice/information that you’re seeking and wait to be inudated with replies:D
No, the Yahoo group is far from the only site with information. As soon as we get organized we’ll put up a “proper” web site. Until then the Yahoo site is where the files are. I try and monitor all the sites where RG65 questions may come up, and as Martin says, this one is one of the most active.
Cheers,
Earl
this place is great!!!
you will find sailors from all over thr globe, lots of them!!! also builders, real skippers… you name it…
there are tons of other sites but i think this is a great place to start… almost all the webmasters or class secretaries are here also, so just ask and you will be answered!
Cheers 2 all!!!

I just want to call to your attention, that Graham Bantock (SAILSetc from the U.K.) sent me an email to announce his line drawing plans for the new (2009) ROGUE RG-65 are now available for purchase.
Please see the classified ads section for more info. I’m just passing the info along.

German - drop me an email and let me know what you are now doing. Lost touch with you for a while.
Thought maybe I would contribute to the class as well. This is a RG65 design based on its big brother VS90 with a little less beam, proportionately. I have a carbon/balsa test hull laid up. Will post pics of that tomorrow. For now, here is a rendered image. See attached file…
Also wanted to post an update that I do make sails for the RG65. If interested email me at visionsails@insightbb.com. I am working on adding a new page for the Vision Sails website.
Cheers,
Brian
Wow Brian your design that looks great…
Question for ya what is the difference between a RG65 and a RG65 OPEN?
Is there something different in the rules maybe?
cheers Fizzy…
The RG-65 Open class was originally used in Germany when the RG-65 class was new and was done to allow similar sized boats from a variety of sources to compete together. Now that the “pure” RG-65 class has such a following, the “Open” class is pretty much forgotten, I think.
Sofar I understood, is in the beginning the class opens for similair boats,
now, the most boats are RG. Some RG’s are build to try things within the open rules, but are not allowed under the RG65 rules.
Perhaps Joachim from Berlin can tell you more.
According to Joachim Pelka’s article in the AMYA quarterly, the rule was loosened to allow the Kyosho Fortune 612 to sail as an RG. This was done by making the length rule an upper limit and allowing overhanging rudders. He further states that while some designers exploit these loopholes, such boats “are usually not found at the front of the fleet” and most German boats are now fully compliant with the International Rule.
Cheers,
Earl
Hello all,
the origin for the RG65 open rule has been described correctly already. At the moment, most boats would fit into the international rule, but there are some, who are experimenting with canting keels, CBTF type rudder systems and wing sails, as well as with additional servos…

Thanks everyone for explaining the Rg65 and open question I had…
I am going to build aRG65 in a couple of weeks probably a Laerke or Viper fish.
cheers Fizzy
Detroit…
Hey Fizzy,
both boats are a good choice, but the respective strengths of each boat are quite different. The Laerke is an easy to build (meaning that the boat can handle some overweight) and well sailing design in medium to strong winds. The ViperFish however, is designed to be at its best in light to medium winds and shouldn’t be heavier than 1000g total.
From a design point of view, I like the Laerke with a skiff type deck…
regards,
Cord
Hi,
the original intention of the “open” is nearly forgotten, indeed. A Fortune, a Basic or a MiniMaxi (just to mention the most important types used as a RG in the beginning) are no longer competitive. It is also true that most of the German and Swiss RG fit into the international rules. However just now some very interesting (technical) experiments are made using the German “open” rules.
@Fizzy: Concerning the question about Laerke and Viperfish - For my opinion the Laerke is an excellent boat for strong winds. My own Laerke was nearly unbeatable, whe it blew with more than 3 Bft. Ont the other hand it is very tough to be at the top in low winds. The wetted surface of this boat is relatively high which requires a lot of power for a good performance. There for the total weight of the boat has an upper limit of about 1050g. You can improve the light wind properies a bit by using a more lightweight keel. This reduces the wetted surface.
I believe that the Viperfish - although designed for light winds - has all characteristics of a good all purpose boat. The design is vers similar to the offset which alread has proven to be a good boat for all conditions. As far as I can remember, the Viperfish is designed for a maximum weight of 950g.
This evening, I registered our 50th. boat owner in the class. Not a bad start in only a couple of weeks longer than a year when we began.

I need help finding the best battery for my RG65 yacht, which is under construction. And for future use… What is the battery perfered by fastest and lightest RG65 builders worldwide?
In my boat: GWS 125 sail servo & a Futaba 3106. I am familiar with 5 cell (6v) packs in US1Ms, and plan to use a 4 cell (4.8v) but it weights 100 grams!
According to martin’s post (#57), I guess the weight is in the Basic range. How do I achieve the Optimum level?*
My pack says 600 mAh. So many choices online. Is this correct for my use, and in general… right mAh for small r/c yachts?
Thanks in advance,
yar
- I remember a small battery pack that was in ARG37. HdlQ, care to elaborate?
I use a 4 cell AAA Eenelop pack. Weight is around 50g. Capacity is 800mAh, which is sufficient for a whole day sailing in light and moderate winds (GWS IQ200 MG & Graupner c261 and a 40MHz synthesizer receiver). In stronger winds you need 2 packs for a day.
Using 2.4GHz R/C equipment may shorten the operating time a bit. Some 2.4GHz receivers cause a signifcantly higher power consumption. May be that this due to the shorter cycle time when refreshing the servo information
Hi,
yesterday we had the first race this year in the northern part of Germany, in Lübeck. 20 boats fighted for the first points of the RegioCup Nord 2009.
For my new Banquish 65 (see http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showpost.php?p=48865&postcount=372) it was the first real sailing in a breeze. The full sized A-rig was often a little bit too much sail area. Here are just a few impressions.
Thanks to Veith from Hamburg for the pictures. More pictures can be found at:

I was wondering if we might have a separate forum for the RG-65 class if only because finding a thirty-year-old class included in “New Classes” seems a bit strange.
