Rg65

Thanx Brett for jumping onto the RG65 bandwagon, we need all the help we can get.

Four good reasons why the RG-65 Class makes sense ---- or one reason!

Apologies to the photographers - whose names I don’t have to credit … but they aren’t my photos.

:zbeer: I received US RG-65 Registration today at noon for memebr number 20 - who (coincidently) will have sail number USA 020 to mark the event. Rick Moynahan is the newest member.

Congrats, Dick, you’ve had to sweat a bit along the way, but it’s starting to come together:)

Thanks much - but again … Brett started the thread (New Zealand) … Sven set up the US website (US) soon to be (Canadian ?) …German Pica, Maximo Lange, Francisco Sampedro from (South America) - plus a few other guys whose names I have at home, Yourself from (Spain) and a few from (Germany) and (France) all were the inspiration to get this started and to keep it moving.

Then add in the other 19 guys from here in the U.S. who put their money (and labor) where their mouth was and it is truly an international effort.

And what’s really cool, is that the idea (for U.S.) started on the internet (this website) and it spawned what is soon to be a new AMYA recognized class. And we have only had German Pica’s “mugshot” with his boat in one issue of AMYA Model Yachting to use for class promotion.

Those are the folks (and yourself) who should stand up and be proud of the accomplishment this far. Me? - heck, I was just a cheerleader !

Now we still have work to keep expanding the member base to assure we don’t fall below the needed AMYA memebrs for recognition - and have some elections to do and decisions to make. Will keep plugging away, and those who may have hoped I would go away once we got this far ----TOO BAD - we are here and hope others will join us. If we get some larger Model Yachting magazine space, I can foresee another “spurt” in membership growth. So thanks to everyone for your help!

Sending out another bare hull this week to California, hopefully they will be inspired to join our group.

If everything works out as planned, I will be up in Ontario, Canada this time next year. Then see what I can do to get the class going up there.

JULY USA RG-65 CLASS UPDATE: As of 7/30/2008 (noon)

The US RG-65 sure is a fun class to watch as it grows. As temporary/acting registrar I see them as they happen.
With 153 registered subscribers to the web site, we currently have 23 registered boats under construction or on the water, to which we’ve had sail numbers assigned.

For fun, I tabulated some of the information that is provided via membership forms, but may not be included in the public section of our on-line database on the RG-65 Class web pages.

Of 23 boats currently assigned sail numbers, there are:
4 from Wisconsin
4 from California
4 from New Mexico
3 from Texas
2 from Minnesota
2 from New Hampshire
and 1 each in – Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Virginia

Also the breakdown of hull designs seems to show a trend toward quick, easy-to-build, hard chine hulls.
9 JIF-65
5 Own Design
3 ABQ-65
and 1 each of Askook, Jif-2, Laerke, PuddlePirate
and 2 still undecided or selected.

Additional information/demographics:
There are 6 non-members of AMYA
There are 17 current AMYA members (probably also with other boats in other classes)

Hi:
We are building Rg 65s from a friend´s design. It has prove to be very competitive at the races. A friend provided just the plug mold of his own design.

Since I do not have a web site or blog please follow the link to see the pictures.

In this place I will be updating the construction

My best regards.

Tato Lazo.

And another one, although there a lot already in Chile, it seems. Are any details/drawings of the hull design available, Tato?
Btw, on the other forum, I’m “guiri”

The RG65 fly!!!

Great Photo ! :zbeer:

Hi Guiri:
The designer only bring me the hull mold in hard wood primed and sanded. i made a fiberglass mold for the hull and later a mold for my own designed deck( IOM style).

I guess they should store some where the drawings.

Maximo:
Nice boat, it is a JIF 2???
In Chile this class is growing consistently, but not as much as we want.

Best regards.

Sorry, now the correct picture of our fleet.

this one.

Hull # 1 with deck ready for painting and attachment. The other three are in various states of painting prep.

Strange winged keel on the yellow hull in the foreground:confused::wink:

Martin:

Good point. The sea master airplane is part of the fleet. By now it just help to call the attention to the potential spectators before the races. In the future i think we could bolt on any micro camera and make some shots from the sky to the sailboats. may be it will be too fast, but fun anyway.

Hi All!!!
Nice to see you here tato!! Hope the rg comes out OK. If its the mold i think it is, is a chilean design based on the open40 class as the real hull was measured and scaled down to a certain grade to make an rg from the real one… It looks pretty good!. I do have that same hull on my workbench but with all the “lifestyle change” with the baby arrival my time is only dedicated to the SWOMBO and the future skipper of my fleet… And changing his diapers of course!!!. I might start with it pretty soon so my blog will be updated with its construction in time.
Dick, just as i have told you like a hundred times, anything you need from down here regarding the rg’s, just ask and we’ll se what we can do with the skippers around (BTW yesterday i received the copy of the magazine and what a great magazine it is!!! Thanks to you and Bill for all again!!!). Tato is one of those skippers and he is just a great builder and is becoming one of the best sailors down here, we have several like him so it is getting pretty interesting, not as much as we wanted at first, but several rg’s and ioms hulls being made as i write.
Martin, on that pic there are, the “winged class” already explained by Tato, two “ULY-iom” one design hulls (70 and 382), two IOM’s (13 and 8), 2 victorias and one RG designed by Maximo i think. That one is from Rolf Koster who introduced the r/c sailboats in Chile on the 90’s. The powerboat is one of the wickest boats i’ve ever seen as it has a huge 2 stroke engine from a lawn trimmer and it makes a sound like hell when running.
Kind regards to all!!!
German

Had a bit of time available tonight, so I removed the deck (was not attached yet) and started to layout and size my standing rigging. Side shrouds and rear stay are 30 lb. test braided Polyester/Dacron fishing line which will be “bowsie” adjustable. To keep mast upright, the forestay is temporary twisted nylon line just to keep mast vertical for measurements. Also side shrouds are attached temporarily - but further aft than where they will be when attached in finished location. Mast is carbon fiber tube from Kite Studio ( about $9.00 US for 48 inch length).

EDIT - ADDED: Just for the heck of it, I placed the painted black deck on top of an (as yet) unpainted clear finished hull and must comment that it doesn’t look too shabby. Hopefully I don’t have to keep building for every color combination that might be possible. Photo also added.

I just did a new Yankee III which uses “Linville Blocks” and I discovered you can mold the teflon tubing into tight radii by hitting it with a heat gun on the “high” setting. Don’t set it on fire, though – burning teflon produces the WWII poison gas known as Phosgene :frowning:

Cheers,

Earl

Thanks Earl -

will have to give that process a try. Did you find any limitations to bend radius? Even with the relatively easy bending of the wire insulation, I found the size of somewhere between nickel and quarter (U.S. coins) was the minimum I could bend it. Could not get it anywhere near the size of a dime.

Will experiment and see how small of a radius I can go - and will advise in future post.
