Ok, I’m calling your BS here. I have just been through Doug’s PM Inbox and Outbox, Ok yeah sure theres a couple of pm’s direced at you that could be termed offensive, but there’s also a whole load of stuff coming from wis’s direction that constitutes blackmail, personally I’d rather be swore at than blackmailed. The only pm’s between Cougar and DL are friendly, if any offense was caused by Doug he has apologised and Cougar has accepted that apology. Now is there anything else?

First off how did you read all the pms in his in/outbox ? It?s not that I don?t believe you, but I have examined the forum thoroughly, and I haven?t seen any place a moderator can do that. Did Doug forward them to you? If so how do you know he sent you all of them and not a select few, its not that I don?t trust him or anything?
Second:
Since Doug has problems with Wis its ok for him to send crap to me? Any it?s ok for him to call me things like the other name for a donkey?
Third:
How can you defend Doug, after you learned about a nasty e-mail from another member of the forum? (Yes Doug the e-mail was confirmed my the member who received it.)

Maybe it?s because I grew up the son of steel worker, but I don?t take being insulted lightly. If Doug had thrown some of his past insults, and demeaning comments my way in person I would have knocked his teeth in a long time ago.

P.S. And please people, I don?t want to here any comments about growing up or acting like an adult. Some times acting like an adult means not pretending like everything is fine and dandy. If someone had put there foot down along time ago we wouldn?t be having this problem with Doug now, Or am I the only person to notice that all the problems on this board are related to Doug Lord in some way?
Doug gave me his pasword, I have been through the whole thing. It seems to me after reading pretty much all of Dougs inbox and outbox and looking at the dates that this ‘ban’ came in only after Doug informed both you and Wis that he has e-mailed Chad to say that he felt you were being over harsh in moderating his posts. This was after Doug and Cougar had sorted out whatever had happend between them. Maybe because I’m English I think that if an apology is offered and then accepted honour is restored and that is the end of the matter, and no-one should take further action. So really, what is the problem?

I would just like to point out a couple of things:

Regarding the use of language - The rule itself explains that this is because of there being “kids around”. It would seem to me then, that this applys to public postings that anyone (including said kids) could read. Does it also apply to emails and PMs where the age of the audience is known and others will not see it? If so, you might want to make this clearer in the Community General Rules

Regarding Advertising - I have noticed that Peter (from Cliamte boats) is allowed to actually advertise his products without his posts being deleted by the Moderators. Doug’s comments (while repetitve and unproven) usually fall into a grey region between advertising and just simply talking about the products. To give an example, suppose Rod Carr was a member here and someone asked a question about tuning sails for twist. Would Rod be allowed to talk ABOUT the twist he designs into his HT (stands for High Twist) series sails? Would that be considering sharing useful technical information or as advertising? Would there be any way that Rod could talk about sail twist or the materials he makes his sails out of or any other aspect of his sails without it being considered advertising? I think the rules need to be more clear as to what constitutes advertising and what constitutes information.
I am not trying to defend Doug here. But I do want to point out some aspects of the “rules” that seem to be unclear and inconsistently applied. I would encourage the moderators to try to reach a level of agreement on how to apply the rules that is fair and impartial (regardless of how annoying you find Doug). I believe the spirit of the rules is basically good and right, but that they need to be fleshed out a bit more so that they can be considered real rules and not just excuses for deleting Doug’s posts…

- i would say it depends on how you know the individual. You might be able to swear at a freind and its all in good fun but not at just anybody. also please see the screenshot above.
2.Yes you are allwoed to use adverts.However when just about every post you make has some kind of thinly disguised advert, that constitutes spaming, and that is also a forum rule. I sent a pm to Doug back in early april about spaming.

Since you were able to go through all of DL?s PMs, I was wondering if you found the harassing one?s from me that DL claimed I had sent. I would imagine that being that you feel that DL is not a bold faced lyer, that you could post those PMs that I sent him. Being that you feel that he did not delete PMs that he did not want you to see, then you will find that he either lied one way or the other.
I?ll wait to see the search results. Or maybe you?ll just won?t reply to this the same way DL never apologized for claiming I sent him nasty PMs when in fact I never did.

i agree with the companies not being able to advertise, we have a pub where that could be done. i dont have a problem with climateboatworks,microsail, sails ect, koysho, using that section. what i have a problem with is companies pushing thier product in the other areas. like new class. tech, and general dicussion. in the new boat. the company could present a tread about a new boat they are releasing. and then leave it at that.
with regards to poeple like rod carr. i would welcome him into this board. i think we could all agree that a professional sail maker could give us a good view. and NOBODY would question him. we could take carr input and either agree or disagree. but this would be ourselves. carr sails are good. i have them on my epoch. i dont know how black majic sails are. but would also welcome them

It still seems to me that the way the profanity rule is written IMPLIES that it is only applicable to public postings (where childeren could view them). If this rule also applies to PMs then I think you need to state that explicitly in the rule. I think we should have a rule covering private as well as public conduct, but before you can enforce such a rule it has to be clear that there is a rule…

My point is: at what point does describing the technical qualities of your product line become advertising? Suppose Rod were to answer a question in the general discussion section talking about the high twist features of his sails. Is that advertising? Suppose someone questioned whether that was beneficial and he gave some regatta results showing his sails had won championships in several classes. Would that be advertising or just information?
There are two situations that need to be addressed. One is where a manufacturer STARTS a thread about his latest product. We all know that Doug has done this many times in the past. At what point does this type of post cross the line between information and advertising. The second is when a manufacturer answers a question by using one of his products as an example. Again, when does this type of post cross the line? Since there is so much hostility toward Doug, I used an example without all the emotional baggage. I think that you, as moderators, should seriously consider what someone like Rod Carr or Peter can say in both of these situations before they cross into the zone that you consider to be advertising. Once you have a template, then you can objectively moderate Doug’s past present and future posts…

but i dont know how to qualify what can or cannot be considerd adveritsing. i will take your example of rod carr. his field is sails. it is what he does, and does well. many people like his product. so from this we can take he is an expert. if he came here and said something about bulb desing, we would know it is worth experience. i am not coming down on doug. but what i am saying is that he has used his own products. that were made by other people. i post about epoch. not peter richards. but me LLoyd Ertel. is this an endosemnet of the iom done by climateboat works. of course it is. but peter did not write it. I did. i think if canting keels are the greatest thing in the world. why are people not building them by the hundreds. all we here is what doug says. and again . I am not coming down on doug. i am not going down that road again. my health comes first. doug is allowed to post his ideas. the same as rod carr, or cougar, or will gorgen. the differnce is that we allow the product to speak for itself. and we wont shove it down others throats. erich made a great model of an iacc boat. every body said nice things. even doug, and then he said somthing about a spinaker. why? to push his own product.? you will have to ask him about that. i am not rrying to start a fight . just tryiong to disolve a problem before it explodes.

I have sent a pm to Chad about changing the rule. I don?t know if or when it will get done but it is out there. Cougar makes a good point. The reason no one has a problem with other suppliers is because they aren?t forcing there products down peoples throats.
Doug is constantly pushing his products by lacing every post he makes.

Will: It is easy to see the difference between Doug Lord and other suppliers who post here. Others from time to time will mention their products; Doug pushes himself and his products into just about every discussion on this board. It isn’t about the letter of the law; its about behavior.
Similarly, every fight or flame war on this board originates with something Doug Lord does or says. No other poster has that track record. Look at Windpower–no Doug Lord no flame wars whatsoever. Now look at Doug’s post above, saying moderators have “disgraced yourself and this forum”. This isn’t reasoned discussion and only leads to a fight.
As to offensive posting or pms I’m surprised that you are apparently defending posts like the one Doug sent to Dan. Whether public or private, Doug’s pm is an attack that shouldn’t be condoned. Frankly, I’m surprised that Doug wasn’t banned permantenly for such conduct; its almost exactly the same type of actions that got him kicked off of windpower.
Matthew: Like Greg V. since you have allegedly read all of Doug’s e-mail, I would also like you to make public the “attack” pms Doug claimed I sent. Of course, if you found no such evidence I assume that you will confirm that fact also.
EDIT: For those who didn’t see it, Doug had a post above attacking moderators that now has been deleted.
