how to melt ice

you could put gas on the ice and melt it. that would work quite well, except it might take a while to put the fire out after the ice is gone.

[-crzwom] Cougar, please, we do not want to see pictures of your wives in the tub no matter how many wives you have. There are other sites that I can forward to you where those pictures would be welcomed.[:-blindfold][:-censored] Here we just want photo`s of yachts.[:-angel]

Hi!
I disagree with IanHB. All Cougars girls are good. The global warming is good as well. We had an interseting religion here in Sweden about 1000 years ago. That allowed as many wifes that you could. The more the higher status. Cougar, I strongly advise you to convert to this pagan religion called the Asa. You will be in good company historically: Harold Blueteeth, Sweyn Forkbeard, and Canute the Great.

Booster

Cougar!
The Asa religion is not free from complications… The gods Oden and Thor are rather ugly fellows. Other problems may arise with number of children of all your (presumed) concubines. Compare the history of the sons of Canute the Great. With the concubine Aalgifu he had the son Harold who proclaimed himself king over England, Denmark and Norway after the death of his father. A younger son of Canute the Great was Harthacanute who’s mother was queen Emma. Needles to say he disliked to see Harold as a king. Thus, Harthacanute raised an army and wanted to fight his half-brother. The whole story come to an end when Harold fell down dead during a dinner berfore the fight. What Harold consumed during that dinner still isn’t clear…

Well, at least we now know that rc sailors have a broad general knowledge eh?

Muzza!
The story is even more interseting. Queen Emma was the aunt of William the Conqueror. When Harthacanute died at an early age and without children, one of Emmas brothers: Edward the Confessor became king of England. He as well, died without children. The weaponer of Edward, Harold Godwinsson, listen carefully at his death-bed and managed to hear that he should be king of England. However, in Normandie William the Bastard (later the Conqueror) disliked the situation. William at least was related to Edward the Confessor. To get some sailing into the story we need to no that Harold Goodwinson sailed to William, and had to became vasall of William in order to get back to England (otherwise…). However, Harold Godwinsson did not obey the vasall status. Here, we have the background to the Battle at Hastings in 1066. The Bastard was the son of the Duke of Normandie (and his concubine Matilda). Here the Bastard saw an oppurtunity to became king of England, and thus change his nickname. A large number of wiking-influnced ships crossed the English Channel. One of the called Mora and skippered by the Bastard. The ships entered the Pevenesey bay, nearby Hastings. And the rest is history.

Quite so. Which leads one to conclude that if you really want to succeed in an invasion of Britain - you really must land at Pevensey (excuse me correcting your spelling Cougar), or at least nearby. There is considerable evidence to support this.

Julius Caeser (in 55BC) made his landing nearby - but of course his invasion only lasted for two summers. To be fair, when Claudius sent his troops over in 43AD, they did land much further around the Kentish Coast, at Richborough (near Sandwich) - but Julius had been the pathfinder almost a century before. Note that Claudius’ troops (40,000 of them) were very reluctant to disembark at Richborough. They’d obviously heard that Pevensey was a much better bet.

Now the Vikings never succeeded in conquering the south and east - so their choice of landing spots, on the north east coasts, was clearly not the best. Richard got it right again with Pevensey in 1066, and while we don’t know where the Saxon tribes chose to come ashore in the intervening years (they came in groups rather than as a mass invasion) - the Kentish Coast is likely (although Suffolk is likely too).

Hitler obviously got it wrong going for the air supremacy thing first - a quick landing at Pevensey would have had the strength of history behind it. Napoleon too messed up - deciding instead to send his troops to the Eastern Front and his fleet to the Med (while en route - stopping at Cadiz to join up with the Spanish - BIG mistake). You see - if he’d stuck with his plan, and gone for Pevensey, I’d be speaking better French today.

Here endeth today’s lesson.

Hey Muzza, check your date on Caesar and 55BC, I know it is open to interpretation so I will let it go.

Postponing Fall Sealowe for lack of air support a mistake? You fly in the face of all history supporting the opposite as well as my relatives that were pilots in the Luftwaffe (and ended up POW’s in Britain. Any invasion of any type without air superiority is automatically doomed. Not only would it never have been allowed by the British Navy, but could never have been supported and then would have failed as well.

Hi!
The mother of the Bastard should be Herleva (I wasn’t even nearby). Regarding Caesar and his concubines:
I Caesar, when I learned of the fame,
of Cleopatra I straightway laid claim.
Ahead of my legions,
I invaded here regions.
I saw, I conquered, I came.

I love limericks there was a particularly nasty woman that worked in the station at Tupelo MS (birthplace of Elvis) and though I tried to be polite and helpful, she always had a snarl and surly response… so on one of those long dreadful trips there I penned:

In Tupelo`s an agent named Sally
whose ass is as wide as a valley
when it comes time to eat
she just can’t be beat
as the pizzas go to fast to tally[:D]

Hey Wis,

neato… I love hearing about and particularly from these old guys. I never could walk by a reunion without stopping in and talking with them. (we would see them in hotels ALL the time)

When I was based in Nashville there were 3 of us hanging around Ops that got on the subject one night before we all launched… each talking about where the particular relative ended up. One guy was listening in… but with out grasping what was going on kept asking my friend… where was he? “He was in a POW camp in Kentucky”… he would ask again… no… when he was a prisoner… where was he? “He was in a POW camp in Kentucky…” poor guy… finally had to say… GERMAN pilot in a POW Camp for GERMAN PRISONERS… amazing how many people don’t know about the German POW’s that were housed in the USA. They did a lot of good working with farmers. They taught lessons on agriculture and actually improved the crop yields in 3 years of captivity. One guy, actually did escape and make it all the way back to Germany. It would make a great movie, wonder why no one ever picked up the story.

They did not even guard the prisoners at the camps here in West Texas. There was no where for them to go. They would try and run off and make for Mexico, but they would either come back on their own or be found (if still alive) out in the brush wandering around ready to come back. Quite a few of them came back after the war was over. Amazing.

Well…my uncle was a Luxembourger, as I am…during the war, Luxembourg, soon, came under Nazi control…as he was fyling for the post, they soon took him…and he didn’t really want to “fight” for the Nazi, but no other choice…fight or die!..so he decided to “fight”…under one condition…the Russian front…he was caught, first by the British, then escaped, and caught by the Russian—>Siberia, he escaped again…with all these escaping adventures, he could speak 8 languages…after the War…he became the Big Boss of Electroclux in Europe…

I know…all off topic [;)]…thats why we are in the pub…oh and btw, I had no idea that POW were in the USA!!!

Off topic? Who care’s - that’s just what the Pub is for. It’s fun how these topics evolve - even if nothing to do with RC sailing.

Larry - Yes - my comment was tounge-in-check and certainly not supposed to be taken seriously [:)]

I had a girlfriend in college, and her dad went into France in 1940, and ended up in the Channel Islands. Sat there for 4 years drinking wine and dating the local french girls, when the invasion came they bypassed him… and after a month of so he hunted down some Allies and surrendered. He was running a post office or something so they sent him back. Biggest war in history, and he missed the whole thing. What a way to go.

Larry!
In Sweden we keep neutral and profit from war. We have a strong tradition here. Our steel industry had all-time high during the last world war. We had a slight Nazi bias at the start of that war, and an Allied bias at the end. Neutral.
