I totally agreed with what you said. The flatten bulb presents some advatages but will require more Wet Surface. I went to check withe Bulb Calculator for a bulb of 2.85kg with cylindrical shape and oval shape at 55%.
Conclusions :
Cylinder
2.85 kg
28.9 cm long
285 cm3
293 cm² wet surface
Oval - ratio 55%
2.85 kg
29.8 cm long
284.9 cm3
323 cm²
Thus the oval bulb requires 30cm² more then the cylindrical, but ! but !..
I checked the total Wet Surface of a typical AC120 comprising the Hull immersed area, the fin & rudder (dual face) and the bulb .
1599 cm² for the Hull immersed area
1202 cm² for the appendages
2801 cm² Total Wet Area
Therefore the oval bulb increase surface correspond to 30/2801 = +1.07%
Personnally I will not bother ,compared to the eventual advantage offered !
I have the plasure to show the new fantastic IACC 120 project, created by Claudio Diolaiti with Luca Nardo: America 3! It is one of the better IACC 120 project I seen, it will be a very very fast boat. Compliment to Luca and Claudio for their work, and I hope to see soon the boat in water!
Actually in Nice from the 7th to 22nd of November will be organized the Louis Vuitton Trophy. This is what I can see this morning from my balcony - I have the sun in front of me but the picture is suggestive !! the AC boats are actually training and are some 4km far away.
Hi guys, Im gonna be visiting NYC for the first time next week, and Im gonna be staying there for about 6 days. Im just curious if anyone has any suggestions for things I should go do or see. I have ideas, but Im just curious. Any good vegetarian restaurants?
If this is posted in the wrong place, sorry
Thanks

For all suggestions and feedback please refer to this thread.
Great photo… however for me the sail numbers give it away!
SUI100 was the last Version 5 on the water…
GER101 was started after the 32nd Cup … They made the mould and layed up the 1st skin to get that number! Then work was halted. Just so the German sponsors 1+1 could have that Sail number. Crazy times!!
However no more are to be made again. In the future I think there will be a push for lighter faster and more spectator friendly yachts…
The photo is a testament to the builder and the elegance of the design at any scale, I’m sure you will all agree.
I went to SailTV and I just seem to get a random selection of the LV races. Is there more? Is there a place where I can see them all? In order?
Thanks
Don
Hi Don… There is what is called “virtual spectator” on the Louis Vuitton Trophy website… from there you can watch some of the races… I should be there in Nice as GBR 75 is “my baby” since 2007 but because this was so hastily organized other work here in Valencia kept me from going… Gutted but looking forward to TeamOrigin’s increased sailing activities next year!
With the cold & wet weather here and having the wrong epoxies, both of my hulls I guess you could say on “ice” for the moment and it is also not the right conditions for painting either.
In the mean time I’m occasionally working on my rigging, have made 3 different types of main booms, but not really happy with any of them so far … thinking about driving down to Bolgna and visiting TD models to pick up couple of carbon masts, as you had shown me when we meet, the alloy versions I have are just too heavy
