Build Log first sailboat build - footy Razor

Hi Justin,
I’m glad you redid your deck & pushrod seal methods, I think your current solution will allow you to enjoy sailing your boat rather than just giving it a burial at sea! Even if it turns out not to be the fastest Footy in the world, I think
you’ll still have fun with it. And with the experience gained from building this one, if you decide to build another, you’ll be able to do it better and in less time. Please let us know how it sails, and how you tuned it up to make it sail even better.

Enjoy!

Well, I have sailed the footy two days so far. Monday & today. Monday I used the lighter material sail, there wasn’t hardly any wind. Today I used the heavier sail, since the wind was up.

It works as you all suggested. It really heels over and it nosedives in a stiff wind. All told, I spent about 15-20 minutes each time. It doesn’t leak any water and the controls work as they should.

I would say the build was sucessful. Thanks to everyone here for all the help and you all have helped much more than I ever thought.:zbeer:

If I continue to build, I will post some more. For now I think the building was about 90% of the fun and the sailing was ok…

I’m a fisherman, for 40+ years and since I don’t fish any more, I am looking for a replacement hobby. That’s hard to do. Nothing else so far really trips my trigger like fishing did. Bass fishing just gets under the skin for me personally…

Don’t take the comment wrong about sailing. It’s ok, but I’m just not really all that excited about it, after trying it. As I say the build was exiciting and I learned a lot! I really enjoyed that part!! Maybe sailing will grow on me, but I have a feeling it’s just like any other hobby, either you take to it right away, or you don’t…

I’m not putting it on the shelf and will do some more sailing for sure.

Thank you all for all that you have done. It was not a waste, as I have learned so much doing this… Maybe I can build 'em and find somewhere to donate 'em to… I truely love the wood work…

Sailing by yourself gets old pretty quick, especially if the boat doesn’t behave. See if you can find someone to race, then it gets interesting. I’m not a competitive person so for me it’s not that, it’s just that the learning curve goes up exponentially(sp). You can’t just sail until you decide to turn, you have to turn at a mark with someone in your way. It’s much better.
Good luck
Don

I also am building a razor come see my build log at: http://www.rcsailing.net/forum1/showthread.php?5749-Footy-build-log
