Americas cup gossip

The movie will be out soon, starring Steve McQueen as Jimmy Spithill, and Mel Gibson as DB.

Well done OR for their vertical learning curve that ETNZ shaped almost from day one and well done for retaining the cup

BUT

My heart and my thoughts are going to one team, ETNZ - guys I have no words to express how I feel for you right now - I don’t know why it worked so much against you when 3 times you should have won and closed this event a few days ago. Nothing to be ashamed of and I sincerely hope that they home nation, their sponsors, partners and so on will give you a hero welcome home when coming back to NZL as they deserve it.

Go ETNZ

G

Me. too. IMO, they are both the very bestest teams in the sport, but one team had to be declared the winner. I wouldn’t think even once about a contest with either, unless it was in radio yachting (maybe.)

the little speech DB made before the Cup presentation was a very nice touch, he’s a real sport.

It all kinda makes you want to go sailing in S.F. bay… Maybe even buy a wind breaker that says ETNZ on it. I think all the Oracle stuff on eBay just went up a good bit.

One last photo from the race:

And the Oscar goes to … LE

DB: I feel so sorry …

JS: well done!!! You have made history.
But where did you get that extra-speed?!?
What about the touch down at leg one? Got new foils in the last three races?
constantly foiling upwind
foiling deeper downwind
faster acceleration

Unfortunately no cinemascope, because no one can move these things (except these heroes)

Hearty congratulations to JS and the full Oracle team, coming back from 8 - 1 down has got to be the most phenomenal achievement in the history of the AC.

Heartfelt commiserations to DB and all at ETNZ - you came so close, I’m gutted…

So, when does everyone think JS is going to tell us exactly what they did to the boat during their ‘Card’ day?#

I think they did more than one thing, on different days..but I too want to know what they changed..probably won’t get any specifics…

I am surprised the NZ did not play the Postponement card yesterday.

Oracle guys definitely had it easier from a grinding standpoint it appeared. the NZ guys were breathing hard and OR guys looked fine…

Yeah, when you hear the Kiwis shreaking with the tired effort to grind the Hydro, you know they are at the end of their strength. Being a former medium distance sprinter and cyclist, I know the feeling when your muscles start to burn, and you know you gotta go a little more, or “go back over there” to grind the handles some more.

I think that might be one of the reasons the Kiwis started slowing down a little; the grinders just ran out of effort after so many consecutive 2-race days with strong pressure. You can’t fault them for that.

Does anybody know what the teams will be doing next?

I think they will probably do laundry and rest, then pack up some gear and pack up the boat some, then a day or two to enjoy San Francisco before moving on.

no fault, by any stretch, but what system was OR using that seemed to make grinding easier? maybe a lower gear, one thought… was the oracle team pumping air to pressurize a tank that would push the hydro fluid around… so rather than than pumping a heavy fluid…they pump air…???

the grinders on oracle did not look nearly as winded…

cut/paste from the washington post

Anyone who watched this Cup on TV or in person could see the outcome thundering down this last week as Oracle got quicker, particularly on the long and decisive upwind legs, and Team New Zealand did not. The buzz around the docks was that Oracle was flying in new hydrofoils by the dozens, trying to find the right combination to get its space-age craft up and airborne, while the Kiwis nervously played defense, looking for that one last win, unwilling to change their tried and tested boat.

so a bunch of australians won the americas cup for a rich american.

Only one american on the boat…Sad day for america.

Great day for the boys from down under…

I was thinking the same thing. Normally, like on your average farm tractor, or a bulldozer, you have the engine pumping the hydraulic fluid. Since in the AC you use human power (as you should) you’ll need to lessen the work requirement (a person can put out only about 1/2 HP, and only for a short time- think cycling or track) so you can gear-down the grinding (how do those work anyway?? Gear pump or rollers?) or you need to store the energy. So the air tank sounds reasonable, as does a hydraulic reservoir. I think they would go with whichever is easier- to pump fluid or air, and which has the greater (longer-lasting) capacity to push the Hydro around while maintaining pressure.

Plus, remember that they have on-board a system of electronically-controlled hydro valves, so some kind of reservoir makes more sense the more you think about it, but we just can’t tell from what you get to see on TV…

Perhaps our Mr. Astute Composites can provide some clues to the hydro system setup. It doesn’t seem to be so much of a secret thing.

Hey!

If you’ve got some time, go back to the beginning of this topic and read the stuff that was posted several years ago in 2010. It mentions the boatbuilders in NZ walking off the job, Alinghi legal misfits, and other weird stuff thy will make you laugh.

BTW-

If (When) there is a new challenge, can we call it AC35 Gossip, or something like that? It’ll help distinguish between the two events.

You may be wrong - considering the footage included in the movie “RUSH” (Formula 1 - from back in “my” day). Ron Howard has done an outstanding job of integrating 1970’s stock footage with new stuff filmed for this current movie. I wouldn’t be surprised if Larry didn’t foot the bill to produce and self-promote, use all news footage/photos - and then run it in theaters and make back some of his expenses. Just thinking.

We were joking about the drama afterwards, in the Pub (the downstairs TV room,) and someone mentioned that an appearance from Alfred Hitchcock in the early finals races would look right, with John Wayne in the later races.

I agree that no one but the trained crews would be able to operate the boats for a movie, but would you really want to those smelly mugs?

I really like the old movies with the real Formula 1, like in Grand Prix. I tell the kids that is what Formula 1 is, but they think those are some kind of old karts, and Formula 1 cars have wings and side pods.:disapprov

Here is a Formula 1 to show the kids. Will really confuse them.

Neighbors will be jealous if they see you out mowing your lawn with this.

Wow.

Almost all of the Oracle stuff on americascup.com is gone. They only have some shirts and cheap stuff left. The few Defender jackets I’ve seen go for about $275 or more. Even the cheap caps were going for over $40.

maybe the only way to get the kids to cut the grass dick…

I remember the Elf 6 wheeled monster and the old “Fan Car” from the late 70’s…

wouldn’t not be an AC with out the courts getting involved

Does anybody know the significance of the number 17 on the Oracle boats?

Possiblilties: USA 17 was the trimaran that beat Alinghi’s boat

The pitchpole on October 17

17 races
