Hi Dick,
This incident happened on leg 4 which is a run. So they were not sailing to windward.
And for the exception to the ‘rule of never cross behind’
Look at the NZ track as they approached the weather gate at end of leg three - they were coming in on port, heading to the right gate, and sailed high/slow to let OR cross ahead, then bore off to get around the mark . As they were closer to the right mark, than OR was to the left, they rounded with the lead and gave them the stbd advantage on the cross on the run that eventually won the race.
John
Sorry John - I lost count of which leg they were on - thought it was on a windward leg. Granddaughter was busy with 3 year old type of “interruptions” !
Some photo’s I took at the AC venue last week. It was amazing to see the crowds lining the shoreline to watch the races. Many people didn’t really know what was going on, or anything about sailboats, yet were there to watch. I only wish the races till now were prelims, and the real Cup series starts now. Now that both boats are up to speed!

Don’t forget to check in on the C Class Catamarans in the Little America’s Cup racing this coming weekend. All of the technology, managed by only two people!
So One more to go for ETNZ to take the cup home to NZL - go ETNZ go !
I have to pull my hat to the OR team for their superfast learning curve as ETNZ was clearly the team with the best package, sailors, shore crew, engineers, etc… They managed to close the gap quickly on the kiwi but they started with -2 points and less performing package which is never a good idea at that level of sailing (or flying ? difficult to make it out ;-))
Come on ETNZ !
If (when ??) NZ wins, I’m not sure I can take a rash of ill conceived, terrible sailing, RTS multihulls all bearing the traditional IACC logo’ed sails (probably soft, but someone is sure to introduce a wing) that are bound to hit the shores in hopes of garnering profits before buyers find out how bad they may be. The fact they may, in some small way, “resemble” the real multihulls, will no doubt be an incentive to buy one.
Then forums will start seeing posts asking how to improve the sailing ability, how to keep them from floating sideways, and of course - how to make them foil.
Oh - the horror !
Just been playing catch-up with the racing - who on earth are these commentators? Quote: ‘Ainslie is not a natural born tactician…’ Have I missed something? How many Olympic medals etc has he won in OD classes? The whole point of one design is the result is down to the skill & tactics of the sailor/sailors with everything else being equal.
I utterly detest this broadcasting to the ‘lowest common denominator’ especially when they’re talking utter uninformed drivel.
OK, blood now coming off the boil. Other than that, some great racing.

Being our multi expert Dick …you’ll be a busy guy !!! :smile_lol:smile_lol:smile_lol
Could always invite Doug Lord back to help out
:timebomb2 :banghead: :tapedshut :censored: 'Nuff said !
Quote of the day coming from J.S …“We have almost got nothing to lose” yeah right …only the Americas Cup !!
This just hit me…
Can OTUSA even defend the cup to get the 9 points? The Finals are set up so that the first team to get the (50% plus 1) points will win, but OR has the 2-point deficit, so they can’t get the 9 points they need out of the 17 races planned. After 17 races, the score will be OR:7- NZ:8.
Oracle will have defended the Cup without getting the "majority of the points of 17 races."
But, according to the announcer, thy seem to be determined to keep racing, even if only a single race per day, until there is a victor with 9 points. I’ll bet the boys in the accounting dept. will appreciate the overruns, as will the TV network (CBS Sports) not being able to broadcast their planned
football or tennis… :dead: :censored: :sleep1:
Gary and Tucker will definitely want a vacation, as they will have earned their pay.
So God be with OTUSA to the end, to the last race, and make this an event we will remember with excitement and a good pint. :zbeer:
And GO OTUSA!
Even if the Kiwis did have an extra year to develop the boat and practice.
Hold it in there guys
This message has been postponed until tomorrow…
You think Jimmy was trying to help run down the clock at the 1st mark?
Great tactics on the 2nd race…
Go Jimmy!
For that first race, I think they would’ve been better off sailing 1Ms or 50s, but they don’t have any of those on hand, I’ll bet.
Does anyone know where the teams are staying? Do they get to interact at any time besides on the water? Maybe DB is buying JS pints in an effort to give him the shakes…
I wish those guys will STOP saying NZ needs one more. We all know that! If you weren’t paying attention enough to know that, “perhaps you should be watching another sport”
The Americans need 6 more wins out of 6 races left !!
ClaudioD
I remember some SF Giants last Oktober!

Jimmy and his boys are ready to sail with straight heads and are going to win. DB is going to try some crazy moves and make more mistakes.
ETNZ just need ONE MORE i[/i] WIN and the AC will go down-under, there is not a snow balls chance in hell that it will stay in the hands of O.R
