the best part of the NZ team lets say they decide NOT to foil… not a big deal since they have a platform that can either sail normal with hulls in the water or flying…
pic your foils like you would your sails… light chops higher winds. ok lets pick the foils to fly… lighter air…ok lets keep the hulls in the water… and reduce our wetted surface…
The biggest issue is the short course, they estimate to be sailing only two minutes on each tack, if can foil through a tack might be winner, if not, foiling down wind only against displacement mode or foil assisted, no-one knows what the right mix is !?
if the wind is up,. then they should be able to fly pretty easily…
even if they can’t remain foiling while tacking I would think that the higher speed while flying would offset the drag from the hulls and foils being underwater during the tack.
the question is, how long does it take them to get on foil…
Lot of speculation that next generation foils will be smaller as it’s all new territory, from what I understand listening to foiling specialists is the way AC teams are approaching foiling is with non-conventional means …but remember the rules were originally scripted to prevent AC 72’s from foiling.
Rule 47.3 Preventing windward dagger board increasing righting moment
After starting, an AC72 yacht shall have the windward board draft stripe(s) visible so to confirm that the board is no more than 0.500 m below MWP, unless one of the following applies:
( a ) the windward board does not penetrate the surface of the water for more than 15 continuous seconds;
( b ) the yacht is within 300m of a mark;
( c ) the yacht is within 30 seconds prior to and after tacking or gybing;
( d ) the yacht is sailing less than 15 knots;
( e ) the yacht is sailing at less than 90% of its performance relative to the other yacht(s);
( f ) the yacht is taking a penalty.
This is why both OR and Artemis were caught with their undies around their ankles as their original boats were not designed to foil, it was not until it was ruled that ETNZ interpretation of the rules allowed foiling this was the late design game changer, or is it ! that’s the 64 million $ question now ?
It could be that ETNZ pulled the foiler out of the hat with their first boat, just to test the rule loop-hole & they gathered a lot of data with boat 1 which OR and Artemis have yet to do. Now they have the data and experience they can compare performance with boat 2 not foiling and then choose which is better …we will never know the true story but it makes an interesting novel in the making of AC history.
Great to see OR 17 1.5 was back in the water yesterday after 3.5 months they done an incredible job to piece that sick puppy, back together again.
However this boat is cursed ! after launching a chase boat punched hole on the starboard hull near the stern, you can see the duct tape patch-up in this pic
What was also interesting to me was after dumping the BMW sponsorship is that a new sponsor logo now appears on the red rudders “YANMAR” …who is this company ? I could not believe it ! some-one in OR has a bloody good sense of humour :smile_lol
JS interview start 2:17 …. the body language would you buy used tractor from this guy ? poor guy, they brought back to life his worst nightmare :weeping:
At long last some decent footage of OR 17.5 they look like they are getting it together nicely, boat 2 will be hopefully be better again and now it’s all on.
Watch her manoeuvre around 1:40 when starboard hull digs in :scared: oh la la bet that’s a crew butt pucking moment !
I’ve always thought that thing was heap of crap but gotta give them their dues, they have turned that pigs ear into something that is workable, until boat 2 arrives.
