12 metres in general

If I may translate Brett’s comment for those who do not understand Kiwi - the reaching legs tend to be follow-the-leader legs with limited opportunity to attack. That’s why we like the windward leewards Cougar.

Thanks for the translation Muzza, I thought for a minute he was having a dummy spit. some of you should think about the thread of “12metres in general” and if you want to do drilling for oil(‘Boring Boring’), I’m sure Wis can arrange it?

So What do you think about the new Nautic 12 R/C yacht in New Zealand? A11 from the original hull with the winged keel, what a little beauty. I had photos sent to me last night and I ordered one straight away. A11 revisited, We can redo the races with Red Dog(Liberty) and Dennis all over again. A chance to get a model of the real original Winged keel A11 12 metre. Bring the match racing on !

steve

cougar

Yes , your right Coug and Bondy insisted it should be built.

This nautic12 , I’ve been telling you about is this same boat that was shown on this forum but with a different name… to protect the guilty,Triple Y Models. The mob that are putting it out.

Dick, how am I with you for putting in some photos of this Nautic 12, Shipmate?

Email 'em to me at work. I will send you address via PM in case you didn’t save it.

Dick

Thanks Dick, I did as you asked.

We are going to relive the83’ ERA when A2 beat the Red Dog(Liberty) I imagine some of the blokes will want to paint their boat Red. Its funny when I saw these construction shots of this A2 boat some of my friends want them too. Now we will be into fore and aft courses, we can still relive the 83’ ERA in new race styles / courses. I bet they will develope into 'knock down drag ou’t events too. Where can I find a good lawyer???

Images posted on behalf of Steve Crewes - please direct questions to him.

hey steve
those look great. how long did you take to build it? and second ( this will make some people laugh) is it the pictures or me. the keel i think is too far foreward, isn’t?. not that i dont mind . i like it, would like to see it in the water
congrats

Hi Coug, No the keel is in the right place. Must be you looking at it obliquely. This boat in the photo actually came out of the same mould that the original A2 models came out of , in fact and the hand of Lexcen was on them so to speak.

There are some people who think all these A2 boats should be white in colour, to look like the original boat right down to the Boxing Kangaroo on the spinnaker. Not so, for the class( the Nautic 12) must grow like all other classes and the full spectre of colours should be used. I’ve ordered mine in what I call Mitchell Blue. When you see pictures of it , it will knock you out(ahla Boxing Kangaroo style).

So, shipmate, at last we can get our hands on a really historic 12 metre that sails properly in most winds, that can handle waves and drifting conditions alike. That you funnily enough, don’t have to have a boat stand to rig the mast and sails on the boat , that has to be a plus. The boat has kept its charactaristics of being able to turn very quickly in all weathers. Thats better than fighting it in heavy weather, just to do the basic sailing manouvers

No Coug , I didn’t build the boat, mould, or anything. Just put my dollars up.
Thanks Dick for putting the photos up, a really nice job .

Steve

Coug with this boat comes the back up like: you get a book telling you about the boat. All the rating rules diagram pictures on making all the Booms, Mast, rig measurements, what the deck layout should look like. How to measure your one-design to see it is up to what it should be. For it is all there.

The book has a picture of Challenge 12 and A2 match racing on the cover. In someways the book has too much info in it but anyone who lived in the backblocks could have one of these boats and be sure they have a model of A2 to sail with. On top of this there is back-up byTriple Y Models with T-shirts, etc with the Nautic 12 logo on them.

This might sound like I’m doing something else than telling you but rarely does a model yacht come along with back-up like this for the average modeller, like me.

Steve

does anybody know what became of challenge 12?. the 2 canada challengers are now down in the carribean as pleasure/race boats. you can buy a place on them as they race . you sort of buy a week vaction then, they will train you and you race the last 3 days. I know it is impossible for a2 to do it. it is in a musuem. but what about challenge 12 and liberty? or stars and stripes vs challenge 12. does anybody know what became of thier boats?
cougar

Rooster one day feather duster the next! I was in Newport RI in 2000 and the couple of days I was there they had a whole pod of 12 metres racing in a fleet for some charity event. they also left two 12s at the Yachting Museum. I think it was lionheart and Courageous. The only 12 that I know that was used as a racing yacht was the American boat ‘Eagle’ and I think it competed in the Sydney to Hobart Race. the others seem to go into these corporate races. There is nothing wrong with that , they should earn their keep.

Coug , did you get my email to you on the Nautic 12? The natives are restless in OZ waiting for theirs, I can tell you. You know these people who like A2 also like it is white for thats what the order colours are. For Mine it is going to be Ming Blue, you know that greeny blue. Well, thats what mine is going to be like. There was onlyever one A2 as far as I’m concerned and Chrome plated fittings go particularly well on the Ming Blue colour. Yeah I know , its not exactly traditional is it but … That wing keel will show it heels to the opposition.

Thought you guys might be interested in a couple of twelves I spotted on my honeymoon recently.

In one of the pics you can see Australia (12 KA-5). Ben Lexcen?s design which challenged twice for the Cup. Firstly in 1977 and then, after extensive modifications, again in 1980. It was during the ?80 series that she used the famous ?bendy mast? which allowed her to carry extra sail area. That type of mast was then banned.

The other is a very interesting boat called Steak n Kidney (12 KA-14), a Peter Cole designed boat built for the ?87 cup. Campaigned by Syd Fischer, the lone hopeful defender from the east coast was hampered by a small budget, less experienced crew and gear breakages which cost her dearly early in the regatta. After series B of the defender eliminations she was fitted with a new keel and then was regarded by many to be the fastest of all the defenders in winds above 22 knots. However, she had lost too many races early on and a bid by both Fischer and Warren Jones from the rival Bond syndicate to change the points system to allow the boat to continue racing would fail. Jones had seen the potential in the Sydney yacht and agreed it was best for the defence of the cup to allow the boat to continue her development even though the Bond camp was still racing Australia IV. The bid was rejected by the Kookaburra camp and the Royal Perth Yacht Club declined to change the system.

Kookaburra III went on to defend and lost the series 4 ? 0.

The question remains what might have been had Steak been allowed to keep racing??.

These two boats are now sitting in a marina and are for sale. An attempt by the owner to set up a match racing style charter business failed and the boats are now in a sorry state of repair and looking for a new home.

It is pretty tragic to see Australian maritime history just decaying away like that. Does anyone know a generous millionaire who might be interested???
