12 metres in general

I can listen to some new ideas, (apart from bath tubs) . Some of these new boats /ideas would have a hard time competing with the odd bathtub theories. I really like the swing keel. This was going to revolutize the sailing boat industry /design. They put it on Nokia for the Sydney/ Hobart ocean race and the boat flew till, the keel fell off half way to Hobart. Boat was total write off.

Water ballast . Isn’t this where you keep the crew awake all night pumping water? And why do all these modern ocean racers have to look like sailing skiffs with model boat type bulb keels? CAD design, perhaps?

Coug , just don’t worry about these"unbelievers".

I can tell you as fact that the Australians did take the Canadian 1 challenge seriously. They thought as everyone else that the trouble they went through happered there challenge. Who knows it might have been done like that by the NYYC. Look as that Buddy Melgels episode, very similar.

:banghead: not from me!

here’s another…

At least they dont break in half or have their keels fall off…

Wis are you on thread? Or are you running tangent to the rhumline?

sure…I call it evolution…as Dick said, bathtub!:sing:
latest design were created with CAD and other prediction softs!

as for me being under rhum…PARLEY!! "but why is the rhum gone?" Jack Sparrow

Whats the problem here is; That us Colonials, Canada and Australia speak a certain type of English. And we don’t run around with dictionaries to know what a certain type of word means to us Colonials. For we have our own conontations on the words like in this case Geek or Geeky. I knew exactly what they were referring to and it was not ment as a put down but rather as a type of person, perhaps not a Mr average guy in their particular field, in the same way we call somebody a R/C nut or a Model Aeroplane Boffin, doesn’t mean they are a nuts or a boffins.

Now what’s the prob? Yes I think Ben lexcon was geeky and a R/C nut to boot, just like the rest of us. If your got a problem with then thats your problem.

Wis are you having probs with “Rhumline” ,I’m sure you will find the shortest route to finding it?

steve

I have no problem at all…it’s just that I really think that CADs softs really helped making boats faster…if you agree or not, thats a whole other problem…

As for the geek comment, you should know Cougar a bit more!
If there is an opposite word for computer geek, I think it should be call “cougar”.

Coming from him was a bit too much, as he is always the first one to call “us” when his PC go troubles…and geez it does have tons…

Back to 12 meters, they did look nice back then…still look nice. But anyway I am not really into AC…only thing I like is the movie “Wind”…

Peace:drink::drink:

My two cents worth.

There have been quantum leaps in 12 metre design.

Intrepid

Courageous

Australia 11

KZ7

Just to name a few.

Then it was agreed that 12 metres had done there job as the boat design for the America’s Cup. A new “modern” design needed to be developed.

Iain Murrays’ design concept won the “competition”.

Give it time and things will change again, maybe not in our life time but they will change.

12 metre’s still have and will always have loyal followers, just like the square riggers and old gaff rigged boat’s in general do.

As for design technology it work’s for some and others prefer the old methods. Each to his own.

here a present:devil:

Isn’t the “PUB” cool ?

Im guessing Kookaburra 2 or 3

Thanks Peter. Happy Birthday.

Steve

Wis great photos . What’s the boat?

I leave that to the specialist…but I am sure you recognized Geronimo

Geronimo, always thought he came with a horse? I’m afraid my education is laking in this area, I’m still coming to terms with the past. They say historian are all about living in the pre-dawn of civilization, somewhere down before 1985 circa. Evidently some CAD got in the way!!

Not to spoil your day to much but Lexcon did use a computor where he says “they then had to calculate the size and shape of the winglets and fed different alternatives into a computor to come up with an optimum”.

And while we are on the subject of designing it probably may not be known was that Lexcon didn’t consider that A11 was good hull. He said he kept the original hull and worked on the keel. He said the wave formation around the hull worried him and A11 had a big problem reaching, because of it.

foot note# The idea for tank test A11 by towing it by the mast came from a Canadian idea originally.

Wis where did you develope this habit of “echoing” posts. I know your got good things to say , lets hear em’

In this forum we seem to be innodated with Multi Hulls specialists. Well thats good, we might get something out of you except “flexible platforms”. The point being , isn’t the conversation there stimulating enough?

Do you think we could have a conversation without having a end in sight? That we don’t need to get to the end quite yet and the logical conclusion was the CAD… THE END.

All CADS have produced is weirdness. Just look around the sailing world today and you see all these boats and the Disciples of CAD invariably say “look every man and his dog is doing it, it must be right”, you poor sods(read winch hand). A whole range of similar “bath tubs” of tomorrow. Once upon a time one could go on a ocean yacht race and not sit out on windward side for the whole bloody race. Now to the modern era, we all get to see the passing wave, that’s progress? All these boats are just big WET skiffs and you need a computor to tell you its good. Get a life.

here try this:

Wind

that is what i thought. had to be a movie. was thinking those wings would do nothing but cause turblance. the boat above was not geronimo. but the boat that first lost the cup “radiance” i dont know the real name of the boat. but i am sure it never raced in the americas cup.
steve. i knew that ben thought the hull of aussie II was not the best . he put alot of time into just the keel. and if you look at it. ben was light years ahead of the rest of us. this “winged keel” was a very rough fin and bulb. he put the wieght. most of it at the bottom. simular to a bulb. and the hull that ben liked was challenge 12. that was the boat he spent alot of time with. just not when they needed it.
towing the boat by the mast was a canadian idea. but you wont get too many people to say that. just ignore. i do. I get alot of the canadian dumb here. why dont we talk about 12s. and just ignore the rest
