Hello Anders,

Congrats on great work !!! A lot of lessons I have learned out of just reading your thread  if you are going to put some decorations on this baby don’t forget to share some pics with us

regards.

Good work there Anders,

I have experienced the same issues with the trying to get the main gaff batten to pop from tack to tack.
Without knowing the thickness of your sail material, I have the following suggestions to point you in the right direction.
With the sail you have - try increasing the back stay tension… Progressively, testing along the way- if the head pops easier, you have too much luff curve and this needs a re-cut.
If this does not work satisfactorily- reduce the thickness of the batten.
If this does not help, you have too much camber for the gaff batten. Cut off the head and make a new one, with less camber and test.
Use more camber lower down, this will trick the sail to be fuller higher up…
I think it took 3-4 generations of sails to make something that works well, I’m on at least the 6 or 7th generation now…
What ever you do from now on, document the steps along the way. It really helps move you in the right direction as your development progresses.

I hope this helps!

Hi Anders,
congratulations, finally the boat met the familiar element !

Just a little remark from what I can see in the short footage.
Just the opposite of what happen to my Main that was too open at the top, Wang problem !

Both sail are too tight and with very little draft. May be good for 20Kt or more.
The jib boom can be made lower to the deck and give some more open angle let say a couple of degrees when in close hauled.

Cheers

Awesome !!!

Before you start playing with sails, I’d suggest take her out couple of times in heavier wind and try it, the stiff head could be ideal, normally this the weak area of square head unless you do lot of trail & error.

Cheers Alan

Well had another go at sailing yesterday.

Not with great success. Sailed for 10min i guess, then the forestay attachment broke (only the spectra string). Luckily I could sail down wind back to safety. Must admit my heart skipped a couple of beats when the jib whent flying.

I think it was because the string moves a little bit in the eyebolt when tacking, which caused it to break from abrasion, not tension. Decided I’d better work out another way to make the attachment, propperly a small hook of some sort, which will also be quicker to attach.

To make matters worse, i forgot to take of the rudder before putting the boat in the car, so one of the rudder trunk supports detached from the hull.

So before I can go sail again, I have to fix these things. Also will do a little reinforcement of the hull in the rudder area, it is a bit flexy at the momnet.

So didn’t get to play with the main head popping issue this time. hopefully next time.

Well I guess I’m learning every time. Still a novice when it comes to actual RC sailing.
