They Show Up Everywhere :-)

Here’s Jim Linville’s “American Footy” by Dennis Desprois sitting next to my 36R free sailing boat at the Woods Hole (Cape Code MA) Model Boat Show. Major “OohAhh Factor.”

Cheers,

Earl

those boats look awesome. especially the look of the fibers (natural, and synthetic)

Yes, Nigel. Wood is a beautiful composite material.

Vive le sandwich!

on the list of things to do, is a carbon boat / deck, with grooved inlays molded into the deck. then to lay some wood veneer into the grooves, block sand, clear, and voila.

Apart from the fact that it was conventional glss with some kind of ant-slip compound moulded into the upstands, that used to be called SHE-Deck - and very good it was, full size/

I’ll be writing up the 36R construction for the AMYA Journal later this year. The composite sandwich is 1 layer 5 oz glass on the inside, then 1/64 in self-stick mahogany veneer, then 1 layer 2 oz glass on the outside. All done over a male mold so one major step is eliminated. A 400 sq in surface area hull comes out at 10 oz, which is competitive with carbon fiber. If you use 2.8 oz kevlar on the inside and 3/4 oz glass on the outside you should shave an ounce or so off those numbers. The cloth makes it strong and the wood makes it rigid (and pretty :-))

Cheers,

Earl
