Rumours afoot

We have started a new Footy.
The principle dimensions are based (as best as we can determine from web pics and the UK site) on Phil Tyler’s Gold Cup winning SLiM.
Length 335mm
Beam 84mm
Ballast weight 300g
Target displacement 500g
Target ballast ratio 60%
Mac rig
Hard chined hull, flat sheer line to enable upside down building on a flat surface.
Material 1mm balsa with 26g glass cloth with West Systems epoxy.
Weight 370g as pictured with no radio gear.

We are calling the boat Fleetfoot Mac.

Looking very good and also on course to be well under your target displacement. The servos and tray is very doable for 40g, batteries can be lighter but 30g is reasonable and the largest rig can be made using light weight film, aluminium and carbon tubes for 30g. That would be a very respectable total of about 470g, or have I missed something?

Hi Phil,

Our weights are a little more.
There is the hatch and securing screws around 7g and we are using 4 x AAA NiMH batteries which are a bit heavy.
We completed the boat yesterday and the all up weight is 492g so your suggestion of 470 would be possible.
The rig is from one of our older boats. This rig is 1400 cm2.
We plan to use larger sails on this hull.
Designing sails at the moment 1700 & 1900cm2
Unfortunately it will be a week or two before the first sail.

Hi Phil,

No problems.
The dimensional drawing is rough but we’re sure you will work it out.
All drawings should print to size on A4 paper.
We have only sailed it once against our old boat but with the same size sail.
Not a lot of difference in performance but it handled very well.
It was obvious that it could handle much more sail area so we are presently making a larger rig.

Finally we have had time to make some new sails for Fleetfoot Mac.
B rig Luff 700mm Foot 410mm area 1700 cm^2
A rig Luff 800mm Foot 410mm area 2000 cm^2

Sailed Fleetfoot a couple of weeks ago with the B rig in moderate wind and it never put the bow in whilst Hop2It version 3 was sailed with its 1400 cm^2 rig and it regularly nose dived. Sailed both boats again today in light wind. Fleetfoot with it’s A rig and using Fleetfoot’s B rig on Hop2It version 3. Fleetfoot was faster in all aspects of sailing. Also Fleetfoot tacks better and is more responsive to rudder. Fleetfoot again never put it’s bow in and again Hop2It nose dived and was out of control once or twice.
Definitely need to make a second Fleetfoot Mac!!! so we can continue enjoying match racing.

What a pity this class is dying out.
They are such good fun to build and sail.
