Request for MP3 female start sequence

Done the general section file uploads

Well done Andrew, I have not been here for a while, it is good to know things all happened as planned.
Thanks mate.

I was actually thinking that I must send you an email to let you know that it was all finished about 2 nights ago. Theyā€™ve also been uploaded onto the yahoo rg65 group which is pretty cool.

Anything else needed and Iā€™ll sort it out.

Cheers

Can we get a copy to the AMYA website people, so they can put it in the downloads along with the old recording? That would probably get even more visibility than hosting it here; not all AMYA sailors make it hereā€¦

No problem.

Can you give me a contact mail address to send to?

Cheers
Andrew

OK, so the sailing year is about over in most every part of the northern hemisphereā€¦

Has anyone used the new recording, anywhere? Was there any success in promoting them for any reason besides our discussion? I know Iā€™ve mentioned it to many people in my club, and even politely requested it. My requests were only met with empty looks and deaf ears. :frowning:

Maybe we can use the next few months to figure out some strategies to promote out idea.

Happy New Year, mates.

We use the one that I made (female/bells/cannon) in my area (our season is actually ramping up with the ā€œSnowbirdsā€), and everyone loves it. The air horn/cannon version didnā€™t go over very well in the end. At first everyone thought it was cool, but after awhile the air horn got annoying (I even got tired of the air horn).

Once I explained that the AMYA version doesnā€™t follow the letter of the rules (I brought copies), everyone agreed to try my version. They REALLY like the female voice. It took a bit getting used to not having any extra time announcements, but oddly it has helped keep the actual starts more controlled.

For some reason we donā€™t get the boats all bunched up and bumping around at the start line as badly as we used to. I canā€™t explain why. Previously, it was like bumper-cars at the countdown. Everyone yelling at each other, protest after protest. Now itā€™s rather orderly, the number protests have gone down substantially (mainly they are for right of way (P/SB) but practically no more contacts).

Since I use an iPod and have both versions on it, I sometimes accidentally use the AMYA start and everyone goes ā€œstupidā€. Go back to the female/bells/cannon and all is good. Weird. I donā€™t know if its the female voice, or that you have to think more and plan your timing better for position, or what. But that is what I have noticed.

We were going to use the new version for the 36/600 NAT, but we absentmindedly stated in the documentation that we would use the AMYA start sequence (a copy-n-paste from older documents). Most were willing, but the RD pointed out that we have to use what was documented (no variance allowed) so thatā€™s what we did.

But from now on, weā€™re going to use the new start sequence for our regattas.

I think youā€™re going to see less bunching at the start because there are less time announcements, and if you donā€™t have your own timer, or keep perfect time in your head, you just have to ā€œguessā€ when to head to the start, and people are probably getting more spread-apart.

Itā€™s good to hear that the new starting recordings are catching on. At the least, I havenā€™t heard of any complaints from anywhere. I think I will bring it up at the next club meeting, and plant a good seed.

But thatā€™s not true. From one minute on, the announcements are the same (minus the ā€œsecondsā€). Thatā€™s the real confusing part.

That is correct, but up til the 1 minute mark, there are less announcements than before. That is the biggest difference, and I expect people will complain about that.

I have always been confused (timing thrown off) by all the extra words like ā€œminuteā€ and ā€œseconds.ā€ Because the announcer takes so long to say things like ā€œone minute 30 seconds to Markā€ ( several seconds!) it throws YOUR timing off, as you can see in the AMYA version. That effect is even more so in the last minute when you have seconds to go and are inches from the line (which can make or ruin your whole heat) so I have always held that verbal calls should be exactly 1 second long (or less in the last half-minute) so I have taken those extra words out of my recordings, and people complained about that. If you donā€™t know the countdown is in ā€œseconds,ā€ you donā€™t take the sport seriously.

I should have pointed out earlier that non-regatta stuff, we only use the 1 min countdown. And with it, I have seen a nice difference in the starts (in a good way).

As for the 2 min countdown, weā€™ve used it sparingly. The first couple of uses, there were some grumblings about not have the extra announcements, but they subsided quickly. Now everyone prefers the new one, because they realized they only care about the last minute to jockey into position. As long as they hear the 1 min warning bell, they are good.

What I have noticed with the 2 min timer, they (I) use the first minute to get behind the line, and start their practice to see how long it takes to get to go through the start line (depending on the pressure it can be quite a number of practice runs), everyone counts to themselves or quietly aloud. They use that gauge how far back to be when the one min bell sounds.

The end result is that, the female countdown, with minimal required announcements, has been well received, and is in use!!

(oh, and there is always someone that says the voice is ā€œsexyā€, for a computer.)

just FYI-

The technique you mentioned is called the Vanderbilt start: http://www.sailorspeak.com/2011/10/28/vanderbilt-start/

Higuys,

Who specifically would you have to contact in the AMYA to get this (or any) new audio recording posted to their resources so that clubs start updating it? It seems that clubs are reluctant so far, but if the AMYA has it, it ā€œmust be the official thing.ā€

Maybe we (the U.S. sailors) should agree on one to submit?

Iā€™ll contact that person, unless someone else wants to.

For those new to the forum, here are some start sequences you may find useful.

If you go to the AMYA page (http://www.theamya.org) and then go to the ā€œContact Usā€ tab, I think emailing the Regatta Coordinator and President would be a good place to start.
Scott

OK, done.
the
Iā€™d like to ask everyone else to contact the regatta director (Ernie Thorpe) as well as their regional director.

thx

Ah, successā€¦

I finally got through to Mr Brawner, the AMYA webmaster, and he is requesting

the files you reference along with all appropriate permission of the owner

May I assume that we have the permission of Ian, Guzz, and Naptalene, et al, to submit some of their work to the AMYA?

Iā€™m submitting the recordings called

Start-2Min-MaryNoClick.mp3
Start-2Min-RossNoClick.mp3

Although I think I prefer the latter the best.

In any case, Iā€™d like to thank everyone for being involved in the discussion of this topic, and developing a very good solution to the problem.

Yes my friend you have my permission to use the files as you see fit. That was always the intention, no restrictions, free use worldwide. ā€œFill ya boots.ā€
Personally I prefer the click versions but that is just me. Cheers, Ian.

Thank you sir for your permission.

I asked publicly to see what the overall attitude was. I was assuming it would be favourable since the files are somewhat ā€œpublicā€ after they are submitted here, but the AMYA probably has some strict policies concerning permissions, which I will probably find out about soon. I expect they might want personal contact information to get direct permission.

I prefer the no click versions. The clicking (a knocking sound on the old AMYA version) seems to get in the way of thought, except for the last few seconds, when you are more or less committed to the start line.

Again, thank you all for working out a fine solution to this problem.

Hi,

Had my 2nd child so been a bit busy
Congrats on your perseverance, and no problems with permissions from me.

Cheers
Andrew
