Region 3 Victoria Championship and Pumpkin Regatta

Folks,

Shameless plug for the Region 3 Championship and the Tenth Annual Pumpkin Regatta in October

http://ashburnmyc.info/Notices_of_Races.html

Last two years have been exciting races good weather (60* sunny) and lots of wind(+15 mph) and just shy of 20 boats on the line each day.

if you can’t make the nationals we’d be more than happy to have you visit us. The nations capital is great that time of the year, for those from the southern states, you may even get to see some leaves changing color and get a taste of fall.

Crowds at the monuments and such are not as bad, so its also a perfect opportunity for the family to come along as well. They tour, while you sail.

even though its not mentioned, we will accept applications Via email, and will accept payment Via paypal (credit cards as well)

Marc

To all Sailors

Ashburn Model Yacht Club is still planning on holding the Region 3 Championships Saturday Oct 25, 2008.

It is unlikely that any postponement or cancellation will be made prior to the Skippers Meeting as outlined in the Sailing Instructions.

The forecast is calling for good winds, but it will also be a bit damp. We are making provisions for dry areas for the skipper to stand and sail, and dry areas for boats/gear/food.

We realize that we have some folks coming from out of town and waiting until Saturday to make the decision may inconvenience them. For that we are sorry, but we’ve been in situations before where the weather broke enough for us to get the races in.

Weather for Sunday for the 10th annual Pumpkin Regatta looks spectacular. Sunny, Warm with winds in the 10-12 range.

I will be heading lakeside shortly and be out of email contact until this evening. If you have questions or comments Please do not hesitate to post and ask, there are others in the club who can answer, but I am also available via my cell phone.

RD Region 3 Championships

Good evening

We had twelve skippers show up today to sail.
BOB SZEZEPANKSI (Even sober I still can’t his last name right)
HANK BUCHANAN ( A New Yorker)
WALTER HOUSE (Virginian)
SCOTT ALLEN (Local Yokel)
JIM KAMMEL (DC Resident, but we won’t hold that against him)
JOE PHILIPS (MD Local)
JOHN AMOROSO (NC Native)
JUAN VELASQUEZ (VA Local)
BRIAN ROBERTS(momma always said if you can’t say anything nice…)
JIM WATWOOD(Richmond VA)
GEORGE GEROGIADIS (Oregon rain bringerer)
LARRY SPRING (Another VA Local)

The Day started innocently enough. good winds, the gazebo was shrink
wrapped to chest high which brought along some complaints until the
rains came. But By and large the skippers stayed dry. RD wasn’t so
lucky. We got in 6 races before lunch with a generally windward-leward
course we had some shifty issues, but every time we went make a change
the wind came back around. Protest were far and few between. Maybe
the fact the RD had mentioned that the protest room was in the dinghy
out in the rain had something to do with it…

We took about an hour for lunch to let some of the drizzles pass. The
hot potato soup(provided by Scott Allens wife) was a big hit as was the
fresh coffee and donuts in the morning (thanks Chris)

We did change the course after lunch. and we ended up getting in 4 more
races until the sky really opened up. @ 2:30 We took a 30 minute hold,
but to no avail. So we packed it up and went home. We did have some
break-downs and I know of a few skippers doing repairs tonight once the
boats dry out.

We did have some help from Chris Pencek(local soling 1 meter sailor) ,
several wives from local ports of call and a few that traveled with
their husbands from far away locations (sorry ladies I’m so bad with
names and the fact that the sign up sheet is a mess) and special thanks
to Samantha (Scotts daughter) and her friend who helped this morning
getting things set up.

We do have the scores tabulated, Awards were not able to be given out
as a result of the deluge (did I mention it rained). So I will withhold
announcing the finishing order until the skippers receive their awards,
either tonight or first thing lake side tomorrow. And the above list is
not indicative of the finishing order.

We are having a get together tonight @ 7pm @ Glory Days in Broadlands.

local and want to come out, please come on down. The reservation is my
name if you get lost, gimme a call. 202 345 7679

As a first time RD I appreciate all the support, lack of complaining
and help I received from all. I was nervous, and I guess if I can
survive today’s conditions, then hopefully it only gets easier.

Also please keep in mind that tomorrow is supposed to be mid 60’s sunny
and 10-15 mph winds. The Pumpkin Regatta, RD’ed by Tom Causin, is ready
to go.
