Pond Insurance

Does anyone know if the CRYA(Canadian Radio Yachting Association) Has pond insurance? I sent them an E-mail but it was returned. Does the AMYA insure Canadian ponds?

Thanks

I asked this of the CRYA and got a simple answer from Larry Miskie
quote
"I doubt it is practical for CRYA in its present form to undertake the sourcing of Liability Insurance.
There is no CLUB entity within the CRYA constitution. Most members sail with one group or another whether that is a formal or informal club. Insurance in Ontario runs around a $1000 per year not per month as in Alberta. Why the huge difference, I have no idea.

AMYA insurance - I recall reading about that on their website. I think on closer reading it was really directed around AMYA sanctioned events insurance coverage but I really don’t know the details or availability." end quote

I would contact the AMYA and see if thier policy will cover you in Canada. Also to see what the policy details are.

edit I ws going to contact AMYA about the insurance but never got around to doing it. If you do can you forward information to me also. I had a "little bird " tell me we may need insurance here in 2005. thanks

Go to this link and read it and see what you think. It sounds like it covers the pond owner for normal club operations for $50 US a year.

PS $50 US is close to $1000 Can isn’t it?

"“Not included as covered entities
under this policy are the individual clubs and the individual members.”
Ok so a club and its members would not have insurance coverage.

““However, available for coverage under this policy with the same protection, for an annual premium fee of $50.00, are sailing site owners or municipal agencies responsible for sailing site facilities.””

BUT the sailing site owners or municipal agencies would be covered for the extra fee.

So in my case I could get the insurance for the pond as it is owned by the City of Medicine Hat.And if a local fellow here had a pond that he would let us sail on we could get insurance to cover him.

THis is great if you owned the pond but I wonder if there is another policy a group could get that would cover the members. In the archery club I use to belong to they held a policy that actually covered the menbers. If I remember correctly it was held by Royal Insurance. Club facitities and the members were covered.

ANd at times you are right that $50.00cdn is worth $1000.00 us . HAHAHAHAHA
For a while there I think the peso was worth more then the Canadian dollar. God must be old cause I remember when the Canadian dollar was worth more then the US dollar.

I just got the answer:

<font size=“1” face=“Verdana, Arial, Helvetica” id=“quote”>quote:
Don,

I’m sorry to say that AMYA Pond Owner Liability Insurance is available only to clubs located in the continental USA. This is probably due to the myriad of differences in laws and regulations applying to outside-the-country insurance companies.

So we’re on our own

Thanks for the additional information. Sort of “screws” us up here in the north. I just hope the city here never asks for a insurance policy. if they do and we cannot find another company that could offer cheap rates for insurance sailing here would dry up.

I would guess at that point we would have to find a private pond to sail on or head out to the provincal park to sial.
