Now that's dedication to sailing

This short video is from Long Lake on Vancouver Island. We get together on Friday mornings for a fun sail, rain or shine . . .or ICE???

We had the same problem at Brechin in East Scotland on Wednesday and even worse the previous week. We managed to get an attendance of nine skippers and then eleven skippers turning up. Ice proved to be very difficult to break up with the dinghy, so we ran with a reduced area and more rounds of a course. Only one yacht, a Widget, hit the ice wall, and we unanimously awarded him the Arctic Medal for endeavour, but the pack was solid as the temperature had dropped below zero and more ice breaking was impossible. We managed eleven races before bad light stopped play at 16:00hrs. Brrrrrr

John, how come you are on The Island? It is winter time and you indicate that you are in AZ!!

Cheers

Ralph

I am in AZ for the winter. It’s just my crazy friends back home breaking the ice. They went sailing again this morning. The lake was ice free even though the temp was -1C.

John

Good to hear that you have escaped to the south. Winter here at 56N can be a bit dismal at times. Cracking day yesterday with clear skies but touching zero and this morning a front has come through with rain on top of a hard frost and it is now black ice and sleet. Eughhh. Sailing is out the window this weekend. We lost eleven weeks of sailing last year, so we are lucky so far.

Regards

Ralph

Just looked out again and it is now heavy snow. Looks like an afternoon watching two rugby games, the highlight being SCOTLAND V England at 17:00.
