News & Info for the US Region 5 RG65 Championships March 14 & 15 / Dallas TX

WOW!! Exciting news!

The White Rock Cup will be the largest RG 65 regatta ever held in the US. Check here for the entry list: http://whiterockcup.blogspot.com/p/rg65-region-5-championship.html

We have 20 boats registered with maybe even a couple more to come! It should be a great time for all!

For many of you this will be your first time sailing at White Rock lake in Dallas. March is a crazy time of year for us here in Texas and you should be prepared for any weather. Average wind is 10-12 but we regularly get wind above 20 and it isnt unusual to see winds above 30+ (check out a video we did back in 2009 for IOMs http://youtu.be/noa7UekzCn8 , hereare some IOMs in B rig rounding at the windward mark up close: http://youtu.be/BbyefaNhz2Y ) Like we say Sailing at White Rock is NOT pond sailing. Even in lighter 5-10 winds our little lake generates quite a bit of wave action! (up to 2 feet at times).

The TRYC had our very first RG65 points regatta this weekend. We had 7 Boats show up but only 5 sailed due to pretty strong winds (15-25) and we learned some interesting lessons about sailing RG 65s at White Rock in heavy conditions.

  1. Come prepared with 3 Rigs!

We were sailing our “B” Rigs mostly in conditions from 10-20 with very few problems. They surprisingly held their bows up well and were controllable. The reason for that is the wind was out of the south and the waves were so high it wasnt blowing our boats over. When it puffed up above 20 it was definitely time to go to C. By our calculations we felt you should be able to carry a “C” into winds up to 28 - 30 but it would get dicey past that Since you have to choose 3 at the beginning of a regatta It probably wont pay to go with a “B+” over a C becuase if it really blows your B + may not be enough.

  1. Waterproof your boat!!

Even though White Rock is a fresh water venue with wind and waves you are going to want to make sure your boat is well sealed and your electronics are coated with Corrosion X or some other dielectic. make sure your patches are well sealed as well.

  1. Wave sailing with RG’s is a blast!

Relative to the size of the boat, the waves are huge in higher south winds, so it takes some skill to navigate 65 cms over 2 ft waves!! Taking on the lee side of the wave, surfing etc. are all skills you will learn over the course of this 2 day event!

Make sure you plan on staying for dinner and beers after the RG sailing wraps up on Fridayafternoon! We hope all of you will be able to join both fleets for our now annual Grill and Guac event at the CSC Clubhouse starting at 18:00 CST, if you are planning on weighing in on Friday and attending this great social event, please let us know so we can plan our menu accordingly (if you have special dietary needs please email me… we are planning on my famous Guacamole & Beer, We will be grilling Pork Chops, Brats and Potato / Veggie Packs again since they were such a big hit last year)!! This event will probably go until 9:00 PM or so,

Here is the schedule for the event:

Schedule:

Thursday March 14, 2013
8:00 - 10:30 Regatta Check-in / Registration, Event Measurement

11:00 – 17:00 - Racing (no heat to begin after 17:00)
Lunch starting at 13:00 depending on progress of racing

Friday March 16, 2013

9:00 – 15:00 - Racing (no heat to begin after 15:00)

Well, the weather was basically as advertised on day one. A cool morning warmed to 70s on a bright sunny day. Our preferred wind direction of SSW was on hand, though with a little more velocity than many would have liked. The day started out at around 10mph, but quickly built up to around 20mph with higher gusts. Happily, the wind backed off to about 15mph after an hour or so. The reduction let boats without C rigs have a chance to get around the course. With the wind driven chop getting to 2’ peak to trough height, tacking was quite an adventure.

Weather today was basically a carbon copy of Thursday. Our earlier start and finish meant that the first two hours were perfect B rig conditions, while the last three hours were challenging C rig conditions. After 13 races on Thursday, we got in another 16 races today.

Congratulations to Lech Arcizewski on his win. Here are the summary results:

What Happened ???

Did all you guys gang up and beat poor Earl into submission ?

Eric,

thanks for the fun… when I get to work tomorrow I’ll post links to some IOM videos I took yesterday…

earl ended up trying to sail with only a jib…

it was truly survival conditions…

had one boat nearly sink, with only 4" of bow sticking up through the waves before freddy could rescue it…

No, the boat was underbuilt for, and uncontrollable in, these conditions – too small a rudder and too weak a rudder servo and linkage, even sailing jib only. It would have been a hazard to others and a burden on the rescue boat so I withdrew both days. Had a good time and learned a lot from just watching.

Cheers,

Earl

Cheers,

team VA and Team MD finally got their boats back… I don’t think the albacore will ever sail again. and my DX6i was damaged.

My theory is that at the Hutchins facility, someone opened the case to find something valuable. clothes were unpacked, boats unwrapped, radio boxes opened and radios removed, tool box opened. finding nothing of value, they crammed it all back in closed it, took the label off, and let it go the unlabled package facility in salt lake city…and become someone elses problem…

nothing missing…and I am grateful that I got the case back with all the bits and peices…

Very sad Marc. You sound a little less angry than I imagine that I would be. Given the speed at which you can build boats I’m sure that you will have another on the water in the near future.

jim

i want to be angry and mad, but that won’t really solve any problems. I guess I’ve mellowed over the years. I’ll blame my self…I opted for non keyed latches… figuring if the tsa ever needed to get inside it would be less frustration on their part…and one less key on my part to have to worry about. but I guess the temptation was too much, if thats what happened

I’m just glad to get everything back… I was not relishing the thought of having to make new rigs and new sails…

I have a heat gun and I may try to straighten the deck out so it can hang on the wall with the dead hulls… I have already begun the process of stripping the boat… so I can transfer the important bits to a carbon simitara hull I had waiting… in the mean time I’ll sail my breaking wind Pakinto…

Wow Marc, a carbon Simitarra? Would like to see that…

here ya go brian…

Very Cool! Keep it up…

So glad you got them back, and sorry for the problems y’all had Marc. Hopefully we will see you for the US Nationals next year wt White Rock again!
