WOW!! Exciting news!
The White Rock Cup will be the largest RG 65 regatta ever held in the US. Check here for the entry list: http://whiterockcup.blogspot.com/p/rg65-region-5-championship.html
We have 20 boats registered with maybe even a couple more to come! It should be a great time for all!
For many of you this will be your first time sailing at White Rock lake in Dallas. March is a crazy time of year for us here in Texas and you should be prepared for any weather. Average wind is 10-12 but we regularly get wind above 20 and it isnt unusual to see winds above 30+ (check out a video we did back in 2009 for IOMs http://youtu.be/noa7UekzCn8 , hereare some IOMs in B rig rounding at the windward mark up close: http://youtu.be/BbyefaNhz2Y ) Like we say Sailing at White Rock is NOT pond sailing. Even in lighter 5-10 winds our little lake generates quite a bit of wave action! (up to 2 feet at times).
The TRYC had our very first RG65 points regatta this weekend. We had 7 Boats show up but only 5 sailed due to pretty strong winds (15-25) and we learned some interesting lessons about sailing RG 65s at White Rock in heavy conditions.
- Come prepared with 3 Rigs!
We were sailing our “B” Rigs mostly in conditions from 10-20 with very few problems. They surprisingly held their bows up well and were controllable. The reason for that is the wind was out of the south and the waves were so high it wasnt blowing our boats over. When it puffed up above 20 it was definitely time to go to C. By our calculations we felt you should be able to carry a “C” into winds up to 28 - 30 but it would get dicey past that Since you have to choose 3 at the beginning of a regatta It probably wont pay to go with a “B+” over a C becuase if it really blows your B + may not be enough.
- Waterproof your boat!!
Even though White Rock is a fresh water venue with wind and waves you are going to want to make sure your boat is well sealed and your electronics are coated with Corrosion X or some other dielectic. make sure your patches are well sealed as well.
- Wave sailing with RG’s is a blast!
Relative to the size of the boat, the waves are huge in higher south winds, so it takes some skill to navigate 65 cms over 2 ft waves!! Taking on the lee side of the wave, surfing etc. are all skills you will learn over the course of this 2 day event!
Make sure you plan on staying for dinner and beers after the RG sailing wraps up on Fridayafternoon! We hope all of you will be able to join both fleets for our now annual Grill and Guac event at the CSC Clubhouse starting at 18:00 CST, if you are planning on weighing in on Friday and attending this great social event, please let us know so we can plan our menu accordingly (if you have special dietary needs please email me… we are planning on my famous Guacamole & Beer, We will be grilling Pork Chops, Brats and Potato / Veggie Packs again since they were such a big hit last year)!! This event will probably go until 9:00 PM or so,
