New Sailor in Chiang Mai, Thailand

I am an Aussie living in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I was looking around on the internet for a RC sail boat plan and came across the footy site, which I had never heard of.

The concept fascinated me so I am in the middle of building 2 “Bob About” yachts (again the history got me in) as you need two boats to make a race. I hope to get some others interested here.

Also I have done heaps over the years with RC planes and Heli’s but virtually nothing with yachts, although have done a lot of full size sailing. Can you help with a couple of questions about the “Bob About”, the hull is fine it is the rig that I do not fully understand.

  1. The sheet outlet to the main boom is offset to one side. Why?

  2. What purpose does the mainsheet post and forespar serve and are they really necessary.

  3. On this model do you have control of the jib or is it just fixed?

  4. The plan also seems to show a vang on main boom with some sort of connection and the plan talks of “bowsies”. What are they?
