Marblehead Plans

Is this maybe the explanation why some yachts are staying away from a full fat deck by raising the foredeck somewhat? Just a thought…

i have droped a few new pix of our pond and boats on my web site http://users.ncable.net.au/~seagull

and that could be a thought div on the deck i mean being raised to alow water to run off and build it up a bit i know i turned my boat into a rc sub once or twice on the weekend but saying that winds where well over 32kmh

Hey Shipmates , what a great spot. The photo on the starboard side three dowm from top is a ten Rater. The rating rules was basically Lwl X Sail Area, Divided By 7500 = 10 or less. The boat needs some new sails or perhaps recut ones.

Div , not many of the modern boat actually plane that much. Your particular one, Maltese Falcon was superb at it. It was good at all points of sailing . It was the national champioship boat in 88 & 89 and it is hard to fault even now, 16 years later. There are not many Marbleheads around with that type of perfection. i particularly liked the Russell Woodpecker but thats personal choice.

All I can tell you about it is that I picked it up around 20 years ago at a secondhand shop in Mt. Gambier whith a timber mast and hand cut sails. Looks like vintage Marblehead rig.
the yacht weighs 25lb and is 5’ long ceder planked hull, ply deck.
What you see on her now is the very first set of sails I made, on a Aluminium Groovy mast. I made them to 10 rater formula, but I think it may even fit into A class with a new set of sails ?
In a heavy wind it keeps up with us quite well but loses out badly in a light breeze. I think I need to make him a new set of sails.
I custom made him a new proportional winch the other night, we are re-rigging the lines at the moment.

If I can’t track down Rons old mold I may even make a new one from the hull I have here, that may solve all our problems.

Cheers, Neil.

That sounds like a top idea.

Div I was telling you about that Maltese Falcon in our Club and I was reviewing a disc of the Australia day regatta at our club and the MF feature in it. Would you be interested in some shots for your page?

Yeh why not, just forward them on to seagull (Dennis)

Div , I went sailing today, saw my mate 'Hair oil’who sails a MF. He said he was interested in a hull and you can put me down for one , as well.

Making a mould from mine won’t be a real big deal but paying for it at the moment while off work will be, so it may have to wait a while till my collarbone is in one piece and I can get back to work.

I will let you know when the project begins Steve. I think 10 to start with would be a good number.

I think decking is up to the individual but I will make the hulls and fit a skeleton accross the top to hold shape before removal from the mould.

Div take your time do what the doc says. could you possibly put in 1/2" by 1/8th" inwales(1/2" down)and perhaps a couple of temp cross beams, would be fine. Would love to go back to Balarat to pick them up in future , for thats where we went for honeymoon. I’ll bring the cook, too

Seagull, haven’t heard from you?

Sorry steve been working on that big ten rater with neil and the web page of a night so i have been a little slack in geting back to this forum but mate if you have any thing at all you would like me to ost on our page please send through we only have 10mb of space but i’m sure i can fit anything [}:)]
Cheers Dennis

Do you mean level with the top or half inch of glass above the inwhales Steve ? And what material is best for these ?

By the way, just going through my old Airborne mags. (about 20 years vintage) and found a pic of a transmitter with your name on it…

Something about exploding batteries, ring any bells ?

Cheers, Neil.

Yes Div , the good old days , don’t give the date of the Mag, I’m trying to everrtyone I’m only 25YO.

From the top down.

Well if you were to ask me I would suggest polyester Resin or similar. Its not as if your doing a new Waliki boat. And Shipmate, you maybe doing the start of a one design Marblehead that might sell hundreds, who knows and PER your Motto.

Seagull if your got time I would like to talk about it to get it right. And we want to angle it the right way.

No worries Steve, I meant what timber for the inwhales.

Div , Been busy, Put in oregon. I have been sailing a state regatta. Complete and utter turmoil.

We are starting a new R/C club in Sydney at Yarra Bay 16’ Sailing Club in Philips Bay near Sydney AirPort. This club has all the facilities, that us old blokes need to sail, these days. We will be sailing MF as a one design class there.

the info on F/G was not correct, it should have been Polyester vinyl, not the other. Have you got a proper plan for the Maltese Falcon?

No worries Steve, Oregon will be easy enough to get, is Polyester vinyl just the standard polyester resin, or a different one again, like epoxy resin ?
I made a few phone calls to track down Ron but no success yet so I don’t have plans, or any idea of the wherabouts of the original mould, so I may just have to make a mould from mine after all.

I also discovered my old source of Carbon and Kevlar have gone as well so I will have to do some leg work.

The only plans I have at the moment are of the “Microchip” which is a “Float-a-boat” plan by Adrian Brewer in Melbourne. I haven’t made one yet so can’t comment on performance.

well Div we’re interested in a Maltese Falcon for each of us in Sydney.

No worries Steve, will let you know when the project is under way.
I am still trying to finnish off the one I am working on…

On a brighter note, it took me 9 weeks, but I finally convinced the doctors that my collarbone needs pinning. I hasn’t started knitting at all yet, so now I just have to wait until May when they are going to brace it with Titanium…hey there’s a new material for a yacht, lightweight and strong.
