Marblehead Plans

Div and Seagull, how about a invite to you first Regatta?

No worries Steve[^] Although I think we need a few more locals participating before we even think of holding a regatta[:-indifferent]

Remember we are only just a group of three at the moment, not a club yet.

If you think it can’t be done, Move over and let those who are doing it show you the way…

steve you’ll have to remind me about the invite but hey anytime u want a sail come on down to ballarat and we’ll head out to the pond and spend a few hours sailing i’ll sail with anyone just for the enjoyment diversion is the same as me if there a spare hour or two we will be there sailing

Just a suggestion, you can try match racing…

Marino

The more I practice, the luckier I get.

We’re going to try and get Down Under in 2006 – this year it’s off to Blighty to sail 36Rs at Gosport and Bourneville with the San Francisco bunch.

Cheers,

Earl

G’day Earl, When your in 'Blighty" could you (if possible) get a photo of the “Yachting Monthly Cup” for me please? I need it for a new book and Mate I need to be able to print it. Thanks Mate.

So Earl What are you building for “blighty”, alright… whisper then!

So Div is there many Maltese Falcons around your way? there must be heaps in Victoria, would there be enough for a one design class?

Did Ron say where the mould went?

The England boat is designed for real heavy weather, as I think a 36 incher is going to be bouncing like a cork at Gosport. Hull is a modified “Rip Tide,” fine hollow entry, hard bilges, plenty of rocker. Rig is a low aspect ratio masthead rig with very large roach, 800 sq in. Sliding rig al a Gus Lassel.

Hull was designed using Peter Rye’s Hullform software then CNC machined from Corecell by Phil’s Foils. Design displacement is 11 1/2 pounds, 10 of it in the bulb. She’ll fly four flags from her vane: US (me, Carr Sails), UK (Bantock mast and slides), Australia (software), and Canada (hull machining).

Yeah, I know, pretty far out. All I can say is that I’ve had plenty of experience in dead last and would now like to see what higher scores feel like:-)

By the way, when you study the “Rip Tide” lines you notice how much the new full-size maxi’s look like her – only took them 56 years to catch up

Cheers,

Earl

PS Steve, a CD with my photos of the Yachting Monthly Cup from when it was over here for the Newport exhibit is in the mail to you.

Earl, we never noticed where you came , for we are all shipmates having FUN. I noticed the last regatta I sailed against you, you had the disadvantage of three broken planks and a dislodged keel that was not you fault. I thought it showed true sportsmanship,by you, just to finish the event. For a lesser person may have given up. These things we honour, about you.

A mod. Rip Tide with a Lassel sliding rig?

Earl this is very heady stuff!

I can tell you , Earl , that coming 5th in a champs is like saying that you could have won but … you were just having FUN.

Sorry to get off the string, gang. DIV, this bloke Earl Boebert, has done all this (what your doing with Maltese falcons) for many years. I have raced/ sailed against him twice in San Francisco and Marblehead.

He with his cohorts have tried to get an organization, based on getting old Marbleheads on the water again. For the very same reasons you and your mates want to do it.

No worries Steve, I have only just checked back with the forum to catch up so here’s some updates.

We have been sailing a fair bit together and trying to help another friend get an old 5’ ceder planked hull(all 25 lb of it) back into sailing condition for “more bums on seats”.

Meanwhile I have been working on an old Marblehead I picked up at a local swapmeet that was nearly junked by someone.
I would dearly love to know its origins, maybe you guys can help.
It looks identicle to the falcon in every way except the transom which is around an inch wider.
Hull is carbon/kevlar comp. Deck, now fully removed due to dammage, was balsa with a thin glass coating. Front of deck was raised to centre,(like a house roof). Rear deck flat, rounded off at transom.
Someone at one stage had modified the hull front by adding a piece of balsa and reshaping the bow to make it deeper by about 3/4 inch. I have now removed this and taken it back to original.
And finally…it had a logo glassed into the deck that reads A.I.S. CUSTOM BOATBUILDERS with an old melbourne phone number under it.

Can any Aussies help me out with this one ?

By the way Steve, I think Ron told me at the time that he had already sold the mold, I could be wrong, it was a looooong time ago.

If anyone now knows its whereabouts I would love to pump out a few blanks to put to good use.

Cheer,Neil

G’day guys, was just wondering if any of you aussie guys had an old m hull for sale complete with keel.

Sorry, but reading back through my original post I thought I already covered this question ?
Wasn’t this thread about plans for M’s, not second hand yachts?

Niel, your the controller here. This guy is perhaps like you doing what your doing but he doesn’t know yet that he is going to be looking for a plan shortly and perhaps you might be the one who got a plan for him and just maybe he might just have a maltese falcon too, or he may later be interested in one?

Yeah Div , I’ve got a few things on AIS custom boats, it might take a day or two to dig them out.

To stop it nosediving down wind on a run. Some of the early boats put extra free board on and some of them simply put a small rod standing up right to break up the solid water coming over the bow when running. Sounds like an important find?

Thanks Steve, any info would be great.
Sounds like I will have to keep the centre of effort fairly low when I make the sails for it.

This shouldn’t be too much of a problem for me as my main hobby is in the design and manufacture of sport kites[:-bouncy]

My current spare time is actually as a result of a racing accident from a freak gust of wind during a kite buggy endurance race [:-skull]
I was picked up, turned over and dropped on my shoulder with a kite buggy strapped to my ass, resulting in a snapped collarbone[:-ouch]

oh well, one hobby’s loss is another ones gain, you just have to look on the bright side.

looks like it would’ve helped the falcon out on saturday, we had some strong winds.
