Looking at a decent 1M (ODOM, US1M, or CR 914)Kit for next project...

I’ve been playing around w/ a TT Victoria and a Volans tri-maran, getting the hang of the RC Sail aspect of the hobby…

I’m involved enough with the 'Vic to turn her into a .Gold fleet boat, w/ upgrades from Longbow in Canada…

I’m looking for a few opinions on the next sailboat to purchase, in my area all 3 sailboats are sailed by 2 different clubs…

I love the CR’, but can’t find any information regarding the other two classes I’m interested in…?

I understand that ODOM is a ‘frozen design’ U.S. 1 meter hull, but I don’t know where to source the hull.

I have looked extensively online, and keep coming up w/ the same dead links or sites…

I love the CR 914’s specs, but a bit spendy IMO.
I am leaning that direction at the moment…

any help would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance…

The ODOM is a very closed class rule - the hull and rig must come from the approved manufacturer. Details here

However, if you want to build, then there are plans for US1M and IOM available for free download. The latest US1M plan to be published is by noted Australian designed Frank Russell. It is a narrower and lighter version of his successful IOM Goth design and should be a great boat. Go to this link and scroll down to US1M Goth to download.

Thanks, John,

-I just signed up on the ODOM site, awaiting Admin. approval for activation of my account.

I have scratch built airplanes(electric mainly under 30") and am intrigued about building a sailboat. Are the tools required compatible?
I’m leery of scratch-build for my first endeavor, was hoping to find a good kit to start with.

I have looked at Tippecanoe’s T-37, and a couple of Dumas kits, but would rather have a boat that is sailed locally…

The AMYA US1M link has a great hull building document.

Building out of balsa is easy. make a balsa stripper to make the planks out of sheet balsa. Info is in the building guide.

Once you have a hull, you can glass it and finish it, or use it as a male plug and make a f/g hull over it and finish that.

John

Thanks John

I’m going to research the scratch build a little further, and let you know. Sounds like a winter-long project, I’m in Colorado, so lots of cold-weather-building-time…

I recv’d my tax refund, been hanging onto it until today.

I ordered a Kyosho AC60(FortuneII) class from Stockmaritime(Hamburg), w/ some upgrades, will post review and impressions asap…

I’m sailing on a city park lake w/ no other sailors, so I’m trying to generate some local interest at the moment…
This should help…

Can’t wait for her to arrive!

Steve
I have been building my boats from scratch all my life. ( i do have 3 kits a Victoria, A Seawind. and a IOM) Most of my boats are IOMS but i go have 3 marbleheads and a jclass boat… dont let the Scratch part get you down. My last IOM i built. took me a week . to go from bulk boards to boat in the water… not long at all. and i am very happy with my boat. faster than some of the IOMs in my area…
good luck with your build. If you need any help… there are alot of people here who build thier boats…
Lloyd

Thanks, John, cougar,

Any IOM plan suggestions?

http://theamya.org/clubs/#CO

Steve which club is close to you… that would drive my choice on what boat to buy…

The vic is nice as the buy -in is pretty cheap. Another consideration would be the RG65 Dragon Force. good entry level boat which would get into a nice developmental class.

ODOM is active on the west coast but th ebuy in is a bit more. not the best entry level boat form a cost standpoint. but its it a lot of fun to sail…

A real popular boat which is sailed in CO at a few clubs is the Soling 1 Meter… very low cost of entry, but a bit of a challenge to build, sails well into 15 mph winds.

if you like the IOM thats great, I’ve got one I’m working on right now…keep in mind you won’t find many new skippers willing to drop serious coin on a hobby they are not sure they are going to like… So getting a club started an IOM or other pricey hull might be challenging…

For a modern IOM format (narrow hull, high prismatic coefficient shape and chines, I suggest the Frank Russell Goth.

http://www.frankrusselldesign.com/Plans.htm

and scroll down to Goth IOM

Another alternative is to buy one of the new IOMs available on

http://stores.rcsailboatparts.com/

I suggest one of the GOTH variants, EVO, or MX14 or the Croatian Kantun. What you get is a nice finished hull with foils and ballast - ready for electrics and rigs.

John

I have heard good stuff from a IOM that you can download called “emo”. A friend of mine built it and with the exception of the sails… it is a very good boat for most conditions. It is planked easy and nothing came up that he could not handle… I have seen the Goths and they are good boats… have not seen them in my area. but i have heard of a few…

I draw my own IOMs so i cant comment on others. I can only cay what mine do… Emo was easy to plank… My friend built that as his second boat . without my help…

Wow.

you guys are far ahead of me…

Mr. Ball, your name has popped up in a few threads circulating around the internet…

  • I have read a few articles you have co-written as well…

Cougar, enough said…

I’ve been re-thinking my options at this point,
I think I’ll concentrate on the 'Vic .Gold.

  • It’s an inexpensive hull to start with(my G/F loves that), but incredibly tunable, given the info I’ve gleaned off many sites…

Hopefully a top-of-the-line 'Vic will draw a few hobbyists into sailing at my local pond…

  • I’d like a bit of competition…

  • An ODOM Scratch-build is definitely in the works, but I’ll save that for December or January to play w/ when it’s -20 outside…

The RG-65 is just-enough too small for my tastes…

My son loves it, though…

Thanks again

I have to do some minor refitting on the 'Vic to get her up to .Gold standard, but all-in-all, she should be fantastic in the end…
