Gidday Jim, thanks for illustration, just about to start lamniating three new hulls (winter boredom ) and I will try this out.
Currently building wing mast which has been interesting education…nothing I would try with a hang-over though
Cheers Alan
Things are slowly moving forward.
The tuning gauge has a new carbon chassis, ABEC 7 deflector bearings and is calibrated so that a reading on the scale is the tension in the rigging. +/- 50 grams is incredibly accurate!
Duplication and replication is verified and now testing can begin.
Baseline setting is:
Cap shrouds @ 2.2kg
V2’s/D2’s @ 3.5kg
D1’s @ 5kg’s
The heeled loads nearly double to max out at 30 degrees of heel, the dynamic loads must be pretty impressive.
Waiting to see our rig designer from the Cup so I can get the calculations for working out the compression load on the mast heel.
Just need to find some time to go sailing. Quantum Racing is just about to leave the shed, just got to finish Synergy now…!
In between commissioning Quantum I had some time to check out some theories. For this, the gauge has been invaluable. I have now reduced the cap shroud spec so I am running a ultra thin .10 mm and cut down the spreaders to reduce windage further.
The mast is now tuned for automatically opening the head of the main and the result is I can sail upwind in a solid 15knts of breeze with full main + Jib almost without weather helm. Very happy chappy.
Also I should see our rig designer on Monday. I have changed jobs and now work @ Future Fibres building Masts. As you may have seen they will build the wing rigs for Artemis…
It seems that the summer weather is blowing on the embers of the IACC fleet.
Without doubt. Its been a hard winter.
Enduring the turmoil of rule tampering and the harsh criticism of certain members has dampened the spirit of this class and after the dust has settled, we can see things for what they are.
That said, certain seeds planted, are now starting to bud.
Gladly it seems, I am no exception.
I will explain further!..
For the decor of my yacht, I have chosen not to rush head on and find a solution.
As it turns out, the best solution has found me, via my friend and co-worker who fly’s RC Heli’s.
A lot of patience was needed… However - Here is the test print, its lacking the real detail fine print pass and the last gloss coat, but the result speaks for itself.
The best thing is that it came from a photo that was taken by my very own Pro Photographer… My mum took the critical shot during the Round Robin in early 2007… Whilst there was ZERO wind… but its ideal conditions to get the perfect broadside pic with a DSLR.
Having the two pieces of the puzzle fit together so perfectly was well worth the wait.
Sorry for the slightly grainy photos… They were taken very early in the morning before work on my phone and do not do the work its full justice.
Cheers, Jim
Hi Jim
Looking real good. The graphics of this boat is not so easy to reproduce.
I plan to paint/airbrush mine… eventually! But I am really torn between the original look, like yours, and then something that has the color-scheme from the Formula 1 cars. This would mean a dark blue metallic base color, but otherwise the same graphics. Let’s see I have plenty of time to think about that.

Where do I order a set
Very Nice Jim.
Hi Jim, boat graphics look great, IMO the nicest looking of all !..only wish I could use an airbrush
Ok I’ll nibble on the bait laid in your opening statement can you share “what things you see now, for what they are”?
Cheers Alan
Hi Anders, if may help ?
I redrawn it in 2009. The original size Tiff - 7Mo available also in PDF.

It has taken a while, but these are the Port and Starboard logos for SWE 96.
I am hoping to put them on this weekend…
Really liking the result so far, I have had the bow sections extended to gain enough so the sticker laps under the knuckle and over the sheerline radius as per the real yacht.
I have to now finish the new stiffer prototype mast - saving me 20 grams up top as well, and I have a new jib boom on its way to compliment the higher backstay loads I am hoping for.
I grabbed some time to put on the logos and a new bow bumper…
Still need to put a fine clear coat over them before I can go sailing.
Jib boom is almost done too… Mast is a little further off finished yet.
Hi, nice job !
How much they weight ? Just to have an idea for future models.
Thank you !
Cheers

Hi Claudio,
Without the clear, they weigh 8g per side.
A small price to pay… But, I have just swapped that with the weight I have saved on the new rig, so I will not need to make any adjustments to the correctors I hope.
Thanks Jim,
I’m sure that is not presenting any problem with the large margin offered by the AC120 Rules !
Cheers

Awesome
Thanks for the compliments, I’ve now sprayed the clearcoat.
2 pack, Polyurethane Yacht varnish. Thinned 30% to get a nice fine coverage.
Pushing to get the mast completed for the weekend, I hope.
If not I would love to put her in the water anyway to see the result at its best!
wow - gotta love racing boats but the redbull one was particularly well done - my favorite with TNZ in design/look and to reproduce it in RC boat is just fantastic - yours look the business !!! just classic
It’s looking really good Jim.

I put everything together, and went for a sail today.
As I pulled into the car park, I spotted a 1 metre and a RG65 being rigged up.
I introduced myself, and it turned out the ! mere was Pepe Vinaxa’s new Brit Pop design he is now sailing.
I was able to sail with them and assess my boats performance in comparison to a current fast IOM in race trim.
To their amazement I was able to sail just as High and just as fast upwind, and smoke it downwind.
I am faster out of the tacks and I would easily gain a boat length per tack.
However I am not reaching my full potential as I still have to make some better less creasy sails. That said, I am very pleased SWE 96 is able to hold her own and even excel in some areas.
Congratulations Jim !!!
The AC120 should, in theory anyhow, sailing ahead of a IOM simply because of the sail/weight ratios : AC120 = 1733cm²/kg and IOM = 1550cm²/kg.
Cheers
