"Footy" class

I think that as small as these craft are, to over-complicate them wouldn’t benefit them. The initial idea of the class was to keep it simple to help encourage people who don’t sail to try their hand at it. Just my thoughts.

Travis

Don’t forget to have fun!!!

I agree with keeping the footy simple and cheap…on that note why would be stop the size of servos we use? I personally have alot of micro and sub-micro servos, it is on my shelf, why not use them? lets not restrict the servo or battery sizes, it will be much simpler that dictating specific sizes and weights.

Vince

Sounds like the new rules are pretty satisfactory, then.

Micro servos/batteries are allowed, but we stick with 2 channels and fixed keels (OK, I give up…but I wanted to see Brett make a swing keel [:-cry].)

One more thing before we make them “official.” Please check the rules from the point of view of someone who is looking for a way to gain unfair advantage. Are there any loopholes that such a person could exploit? Unintended consequences of any rule that we’re not seeing?

Thanks for all the help…Bill

can someone explain to me what it means by
“no more than 1/8? (3mm) hollow in side view or plan view.”

Cheers
Stephen

Since you have specified a maximum mast height and maximum overhang of sails and rudder, what about a maximum draft and maximum bulb/fin weight? I have two of Bretts initial ‘Footy’ hulls on the bench at the moment but am a bit stuck as to the optimum ballast to make.

Ralph

I am thinking it is possibly a bad thing to over regulate at this early stage of the the classes life.
perhaps we can use what is written above as a general guide and see what “shakes out” over another summer of sailing.
Lets get some more boats on the water and get some reports of what works and what doesn’t before setting the rules in stone.
Brett

This is a bit of nit-picking, but with regard to the rules, I noticed it said the that ballast shouldn’t be anything heavier than lead.

I don’t even know if that was a pseudo-official set of rules, but I think it would be more proper to use the word denser. Just thinking about the old “which one is heavier, a pound of feathers or bricks?”

Graham

Point well made, Graham, thanks. I’ve changed my copy of the rules as you suggested. And don’t worry about nit-picking. The idea is to do as much of that now as possible, saving us grief and arguments later. We’ll allow time for everyone to think about this set, and maybe get some more real experience with these boats before we make the rules “official.”

Bill

We shouldn’t be to worried about the wording of the rules as written at present.
What we need to nail down first is the general idea of what should be restricted, what shouldn’t be etc etc.
The proper wording can come later when we have the general idea of what we want.
keep the thoughts and suggestions flowing guys.
Thanks all for the comments so far
Brett

I’ve been busy having to work [:(!] lately, so not too much building time. Thought you might like to see some progress on MiniMe, though…so here you go…Bill

Hey Vince, I’ve been wondering how your 2nd Footy is coming along. Did the sign material work out well? Let us know, and show us some pics, too.

Thx…Bill

The 2mm sign material works great…but the racing season is starting soon so I will be putting the footies away for awhile. I have to be honest about the footy, while it is cute and different it isn’t half as fun as my Mistral (scratch built US1M) and no one else has a footy so it really isn’t all that much fun by myself.

Maybe when my daughter gets older she can sail it to learn…it is a great boat to learn how to build a boat for the first time.

Vince

Vince, I certainly understand your need to concentrate on the US1m, but here’s an idea… [:-bulb] Why not take the footys to the pond, too? Sail one at lunch break for a while, and I’ll bet someone will want to sail the other one. Two boats is a race! Sailing them is more challenging than they might think, so you never know, the guys might have some fun…

Bill

Ian, while surfing around I saw some new pics of your footy on your site. Looks great! Any tuning tips for us, or advise on handling?

Bill

Rob Amaral and I have a couple of Footy’s and we are both AMYA members I’m thinking you could add us to the list if your trying to get to twenty.

I built a web site and posted owners and AMYA numbers to get the Fairwind class going.

OK, then let’s see how many boats we can get registered with AMYA!

Currently, registering in the “Open” class, as Travis suggests, is the only option. To be recognized, we need 20 boats, a set of rules, and someone designated as a temporary Class Secretary, to coordinate things until the first election is held.

Tell me what you think…should we go for it?

Hi Rick. I email with Rob often, so already had you down. We’ve moved to a new location, so change your favorites! Chad set up a special place just for Footys, separate from this New Classes discussion. Thanks for the startup tip. Bruce will be working on our website when he can. If you’d like to help, we’ll get you two together. Any other thoughts on getting a class going would be much appreciated.

Thx…Bill

I found this while looking for some other stuff, BlueSky, I think. I thought it’s neat how far things have gotten on the 5 years since Brett started this discussion in Feb. 2004. This is from post #15:

No bowsprits or bumpkins? 3 rigs allowed?
20 inch rig height
7 inch keel…

when I get some time ( maybe Sunday) I will go through the whole topic and make up a timeline:
discussion started
basic design rules
box rule defind
any battery chemistry allowed
micro servos allowed
etc.
