"Footy" class

Got my first footy finished and had a sail last sunday night in a mates pool and what a laugh theese little boats behave just like they should and are great fun to chuck around in a pool. now i just have to get everyone else to see the light and build one for themselves so we can get a fleet going (already 1 more on the way from michaelb)

Nice one! Looks like a mini, Mini 6.5!

Luff 'em & leave 'em.

Here’s some pix of my “Footy”.My first scratch built boat. I used 1/64 ply and glassed it. For the keel weight I used some “stick-on” wheel weights, these are flat strips of lead and easily faired to smooth shape with a little " bondo". JK

Pretty Cool!! Almost made me run home and finish the one I have sitting on my table. [:)][:)]

Pretty Cool!!!
Definitely makes me want to run home and build one too.

I have two Footies. One of them travled with me to Morro Bay, CA this week. Here are a couple of pictures of my boat in the big water. The nice thing about a footy is you can toss it in the back of the truck and off you go.

An old sailer pulled up while I was sailing and was yelling Jib Ho from his Van and laughing as the little boat turned and bounced over the waves.

I am new to the forum and found this post… I have to build me a Footy! Does anyone have an opinion about me wanting to make a more clasic rounded hull as opposed to the “box” hull? I think it would sail better and I need a good winter project, I am going to make a female mold so I can pop out a few if them and take them with me so I can race where ever I go![:-bouncy]

The plans seem straight forward enough and I will be using smaller than standard servos since I have so many.

I sail a Victoria and Mistral…and Footy soon.

I’m with you Vinne…hard-chine hulls just don’t do it for me.

Good news, though! A round-hull footy called Pipsqueak is available as a kit on Brett’s website. Very reasonable price, too.

I have one on order, but being interested in design, I had to give it a go. Halfpint is my creation using Hullform software (available free at Hullform.com.) I started building the plug yesterday, and will try to keep you posted on progress.

Ultimately Pipsqueak, Halfpint, my friend’s Bobabout, and hopefuly others will race here in NH at Laconia Model Yacht Club.

Btw, I tried to insert a file (Halfpint) but it didn’t work. Is there a trick to posting files here?

Posted files here on this forum have to be a “picture” or “image” type of file format …namely JPEG or BIP … You (used to - haven’t tried lately) could also save a file such as PDF format in the “resources” and then “files” area - but since the change in server and transfer of files, I am not sure if Chad ever took the time to verify that saving to that area of the forum still works. You would have to save in your personal library that we are all given (Look for your name). If you don’t find a library (or album) email Chad - but again, seems it takes a while before he reads or responds.

You will not be able to save DXF, DWG, Excel, etc. files unless you print, scan and then save as a picture (or image) format like I did of the Excel file for “Fabrics” where I compared some prices for glass, Kevlar and carbon fabrics elsewhere on the forum.

Just a software hint … a free download of CADviewer 3.2 (Aussie product - thank you very much to the “Down-Under-Boys”) lets you view DXF or DWG autocad type files, and then save them as JPEG, TIFF, etc. which could then be imported into postings here - given overall file size restrictions.

EDIT/UPDATE: Sorry - it’s now CADVier 4.0 and can be found here: http://www.guthcad.com/dlviewer.htm

Just a quick picture of my second Footy,

I have enjoyed these little boats, easy to travel with and they enjoy a breeze.

The work work tables are a mess, notice the Soling 50 hull to the right that has been waiting… I need to work on the big boats too.

I’m not sure about being able to knock one of these boats togeather in a weekend. Took me longer but I’m a slow builder.

I’m intrigued with the historical precedents of the footy, particularly the Balmain Bugs of Australia. Does anyone know where I could get a plan for a 12" Balmain Bug?

Thanks…Bill

Happy New Year everyone! Here’s a few pics of “Halfpint,” my new footy. Designed in Hullform, plug carved from pine, hull laid up in fiberglass, basswood fin, bulb from fishing weights stuck together and smoothed with Bondo. Next task is a set of sails…

_/ if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it! _

Hey Bill -

any thought to selling them? Maybe in a “short kit” form, just glassed and ready for finishing? Looks like they would be a fun boat for youngsters as well as adults.

Nice job.

Footy with a sugar scoop stern, Brilliant!

Luff 'em & leave 'em.

Thanks for the supportive comments re “Halfpint.” I hope she’ll sail as good as she looks! I’m building a second one now, same hull with differently shaped foils and a raised foredeck to give it a bit of a different look. No plans to go into the kit business…Brett is too much competition for me! If she sails OK, I’ll make the mold available to any of the New England clubs who want to build a few. I’d like to encourage the Footy here in the U.S. …maybe the next AMYA class?

What is everyones opinion about the efficiency of a straight walled hull (per plans) and a rounded hull? Do you think the rounded hull will be faster in the water, or is the rounded mostly for looks?

I am about to start my footy hull and am wondering if it really makes a difference?

Thanks
Vince

Your question is a good one, Vince. The knee-jerk reaction is to tell you that rounded hulls are more efficient, but I decided to test that assumption to find out how much. I set up two hull designs in Hullform. The key dimensions are the same in both.

The round hull displaced 500 grams, but the chine hull displaced 600 grams - no surprise there.

Wetted suface results were as I expected, too. The round hull wetted surface goes from .28sq m. at 0 degrees heel to .29 at 40 degrees. The chine hull goes from .348 at 12 degrees to .352 at 40 degrees.

The surprise to me was the drag calculations. Drag of the round hull was .16 at 1 knot to .23 at 4 knots. The chine hull showed less drag - from .13 at 1 knot to .18 at 4 knots. The speed range I used was arbitrary - I have no idea how fast these things can really sail.

Of course, these calculations don’t take into account point of sail, wave conditions, etc…

So what conclusion? My personal opinion is that in a practical sense they are going to appear pretty equal, and as usual, skipper skill will be the most likely determining factor.

Anybody else have ideas?

Errrm surely (unless I’m missing somthing here) the two different hullforms should displace the same? Changing the hull shape shoulden’t change the weight of the boat (enough to make much of a difference anyway). What happens if the displacement is set the same? Any chance you can upload a screenshot of the hullforms you tried?
Speed wise the hull speed of a footy is around 1.35 knots acording to the numbers, although I dont trust that as a maximum speed with somthing so small and I’m sure I’ve had mine going faster, although its hard to tell.

I’ll really have to start playing with these again, their just about the right size to build in a student room. Might have to build myself a mini hotbox and make some carbon ones!

Luff 'em & leave 'em.

Thanks for the science Mudhenk, I will go with a straight walled hull since it doesn’t seam to make a difference in drag. I will keep everyone updated on my progess.
