So I’m back after a relatively rough summer and ready to start my new, lightweight Star 45. Being poverty-stricken and not really a fan of drum winches, I’m poking around for an acceptable (and light) sail servo. Any ideas? Will the HiTec HS815BB do the trick?
Thanks in advance
Rob

OK - with no replies, I’m gonna have to assume that nobody is using that servo - 'nuff said. Let me chaange the question: What servos are you guys using in your Star 45’s? I’m not deadset against drums - I’m installing 2 in a pair of Canterbury J’s I’m using - but arms are, in my humble opinion, simpler to rig. So? WHatcha got? My current Dumbass Star 45 is using a modified-to-be-proportional Dumas 3701 monster. It’s too heavy, I think.
Thanks
Rob

Of the three, my choice would be the HSR-5995TG its light (2.18 oz) fast and its throw is adjustable up to 180 degrees. If you need more details than tower gives check here. http://www.servocity.com/html/hsr-5995tg_ultra_torque.html
Its maximum output is 417 oz-in. at 7.2v, now that?s some serious power for a little servo.
The down side is you need a servo programmer to set the servo up, and they are about $150. However if you have a friend with one, or find one on eBay cheap or something it might be good.
I’m using the 815 arm winch on the MultiONE and with about 1100 sq. inches of sail area I find it both strong enough and fast enough for a multihull. Unfortunately, because the arm is so long, I had to mount it with the arm above deck, since the total hull width is only about 3 inches for the main hull. Didn’t respond earlier, as it isn’t directly related to use on a Star !
Thanks, all - that’s exactly the info I needed. Muzzza - the club has 4 Canterbury J’s, unfortunately none completed yet. Once they’re done (Spring '05) I’lll post pics of these way pretty boats…
