Cheap Winch for Star 45?

So I’m back after a relatively rough summer and ready to start my new, lightweight Star 45. Being poverty-stricken and not really a fan of drum winches, I’m poking around for an acceptable (and light) sail servo. Any ideas? Will the HiTec HS815BB do the trick?

Thanks in advance
Rob

OK - with no replies, I’m gonna have to assume that nobody is using that servo - 'nuff said. Let me chaange the question: What servos are you guys using in your Star 45’s? I’m not deadset against drums - I’m installing 2 in a pair of Canterbury J’s I’m using - but arms are, in my humble opinion, simpler to rig. So? WHatcha got? My current Dumbass Star 45 is using a modified-to-be-proportional Dumas 3701 monster. It’s too heavy, I think.

Thanks
Rob

Erk - ask Greg V, but they’re known as the ‘hot rod’. 45" x 12" (I think), 12 pounds, roughly 1,000 squares and they’ll plane! Way fun.

Any of these three should work; they all have over 330 oz. of torque.

Of the three, my choice would be the HSR-5995TG its light (2.18 oz) fast and its throw is adjustable up to 180 degrees. If you need more details than tower gives check here.
http://www.servocity.com/html/hsr-5995tg_ultra_torque.html

Its maximum output is 417 oz-in. at 7.2v, now that?s some serious power for a little servo.

The down side is you need a servo programmer to set the servo up, and they are about $150. However if you have a friend with one, or find one on eBay cheap or something it might be good.

Rob -

I’m using the 815 arm winch on the MultiONE and with about 1100 sq. inches of sail area I find it both strong enough and fast enough for a multihull. Unfortunately, because the arm is so long, I had to mount it with the arm above deck, since the total hull width is only about 3 inches for the main hull. Didn’t respond earlier, as it isn’t directly related to use on a Star !

or Futaba S3801, I use 6v with it.

Torque:156 oz/in @ 4.8V - 194 oz/in. @ 6V
11.2 kg/cm @ 4.8V - 14.0 kg/cm @ 6V
Transit Time: .33 sec/60 deg @ 4.8V - .26 sec/60 deg @ 6V
Arm Travel: 125 degrees (under optimum conditions)
Length: 2.4" (61mm)
Width: 1.2" (30mm)
Height: 2.0" (51mm)
Weight: 3.7 oz (107g)

more costy than the Hitec 815 though

Thanks, all - that’s exactly the info I needed. Muzzza - the club has 4 Canterbury J’s, unfortunately none completed yet. Once they’re done (Spring '05) I’lll post pics of these way pretty boats…

re:815 hitec winch
Tower website shows this servo as discontinued. Am going to try futaba 3801 as a substitute. Clyde
