buoys? marks ? or whatever??

I finally made some buoys[:-captain]…

But; they didnt work as I expected[:-weepn].

I made buoys with a kind of floating anker;as I don’t know how deep the lake is; I thought it could be nice; the lake is also used by MANY fishers and they do leave some kind of…trash…sorry fishing line!
Anyway they still move way too much! they just dont want to stay where they should[:-shake]

I used 0.5 liters PET bottles; 1 meter line and 3*25 lead as anker…in the middle of the line I made some kind of plastic sheet to avoid moving…but it seems that it doesn’t work

Any ideas?

I used a item that they called “pool noodles” it is a floation foam used for kids to play with in pools. I cut the foam into lengths of about 10 inches.

I took parachute cord and threaded it threw a lenght of pipe about 12inches long then attached the cord to the foam via a small hole. The float and the weight is thrown into the pond and all I do is tighten up the line to adjust where the float s sitting. Each float has about 25 feet of line. and fully adjustable from short as to location. With the line threw the pipe you can adjust how the bouy is sitting in the water really easy

The pool noodles work great and come in yellow green and red and purple colours. Oh and the pipe is galvanised pipe so no worries to the enviroment.

I just use ballons got a big bag from the party supply store. For an anker i use some lead weight that i cast in a muffin pan. was about 2 lbs. just tie some fishing line between them both and your done.

OK, for good cheepo marks use the larger Gatorade type bottles. Maybe a quart size I think it is? See here http://members.tripod.com/~ghmyc_1m/00_01_75.jpg
Primer in WHITE primer and then spray in a neon color like yellow, orange or green. It?s good to paint some black vertical (when the mark is floating) lines on the bottle. This helps if someone hits the mark, as you can see it move or turn much easier.
Put a screw eye in the cap and seal it up good. Screw the cap on good and tight.
We use the old window sash weights . Tie a line onto the sash weight. Run the other end of the line trough the screw eye and then tie that end to good heavy fishing sinker.
Make sure you have enough line here. Use more then you think you need and wind the extra around the sash weight and tie it off as you may need more line in different areas of the lake.
Drop the sash weight were you want the mark. The fishing sinker should NOT hit bottom also, as it can just go down a few feet to do its job of ballasting the mark and taking up slack so the mark stays still. Remember, the line slides through the screw eye freely. This makes everything self adjusting.

For some great marks, check out water ski slalom buoys. That’s what we use now, and there great. See here http://members.tripod.com/~ghmyc_1m/July_26_25.JPG

First thanks for all the ideas…

but is there anyone who tried a system (like the one I would like to use) without any line coming to the shore? Thats why I would like to make my “floatable anker” system work.

Anyway thanks for the replies.

Wis,

Using a sea anchor system rather than an anchor lying on the bottom is going to result in your buoys drifting around. Can you explain a little better why it is that you do not want to have an anchor lying on the bottom?

You say you Do not want a line running to shore. Does that mean you prefer to go out into the pond with a small boat to set/retrieve your buoys?

If that is what you are planning on doing that perhaps the best thing to do is to copy what full size boaters use. Attach your anchor to a spool of line. Drop your anchor until it touches bottom, then tie off the spool at that length. Attach your buoy to the spool. You may want to add a small weight to the spool so that when you set it in the water, it is not floating around near the buoy but instead is hanging below the bouy.

If you use some other method of setting/retrieving your bouys, or if your pond has some special situation that does not allow you to use the throwable buoys, please explain what those are. That will help us to understand your special needs and come up with a system that works for you…

Will,

I amm planning to retrieve the buoys with my “rescue” tug.

Why I dont want some line coming to the shore…well I have concrete alla round the lake…and people walking on it…its already hard when I have amy stuff there…you know, people love to complain…about all they can! 'specially fishers[:-banghead]

So, I was thinking using a floatable anker system.
I also dont know how deep the lake is…it seems nobody does[:-nonono]

Thanks for the idea

Wis,

If you can find out how deep the lake is, there is another idea I have seen. The lake needs to be roughly uniform depth with no more than a 2:1 variation in depth from the deepest point where you might want to put a buoy to the shallowest point.

The design uses two weights on an anchor line - one heavier than the other. The anchor line is free to slide on the bottom of the buoy. When you drop the anchors into the water, the heavier anchor will drop to the bottom which raises the lighter weight (picture the counterwieghts in an old grandfather clock). Thus, this design will adjust to the depth of the pond. As long as the anchor line is long enough to let the heavy anchor touch bottom in the deepest part of the pond without letting the smaller weight touch bottom at the shalowest point in the pond, it will work.

For retrieval, you can simply drag the buoy back to shore by dragging the anchor along the bottom.

after our chat on msn about getting the marks ashoe again velcro your marks and put the oppisite side of the velcrom on the bow of the tug hit the mark with the bow of your tug and keek driving the mark ashore

Never hold your farts in.
They travel up your spine, into your brain,
and that’s where sh*+y ideas come from.

that is a darn good idea…will try that…

Thanks

ok…went sailing and tried the buoys…it was a total !"#$#%&%& [:-banghead]…so back to the drawing board [;)] and I will need to re-think about the whole thing…the good news is, I now know how deep the lake/pond is: +/- 2 metres…

anyway thanks for the help

PPS: the velcro didnt work at all…but worth a try [;)]

Over here we use a simple system. Round balls about 15 cm diameter, that is in an “onion” bag(bag that is made of plastic and looks like fish net stockings) to which we tie a rope with a 2 litre PET bottle on the other end. The bottle is three quarters full of sand.

They work really well and provide the bottle is on the bottom there is no problem with dragging.

The marks move sometimes when the boats get hooked up on them, but we just go back out and set them again.
