12 metres in general

for those people who watch the races. even the slow boats. advance was made to win in the conditions, that were off newport in late august. what alan payne forgot was you had to win early to survive. advance had beaten some of the boats that had already gone on. advance had beaten victory 83, and I think aII. Canada 1 had already passed. before advance raced them. advance was a good boat . just no money, and too late. as for australia, i was sure it was sold by bond right after 1980.

long live the 12s
btw. conner lost because he is an a**. in 1983 race 1 aII breaks a rudder, race 2 aII has a mast problem. the only real race liberty won. which i think was the best of the 7 was race 4. so to say it went that long. was not dur to dennis conner but due to aII breaking early. if aII had not broken it would have been over in 5

You know, a personal attack is a personal attack. Its really not appropriate for a moderator to call Dennis Connor an “a**”.

And, if it matters, I’ve known Dennis for over a decade now and I can say that he is a great guy and a generous friend. He has the best internal sense of time/distance of any person I’ve ever known and he is without question a great sailor. Surprisingly, he is a little shy and uncomfortable around strangers and that gives some people a false impression.

Again, it is one thing to comment on how well (or not) someone sailed a race, but to trash them personally is just plain wrong.

The comment i made about dennis conner, i stand by. i have met dc twice. and both times he made me feel like i was not even worth his while. like i should not even bother him. the first time i met him was in 1983. and while i was understand he was under alot of pressure, i dont think I should have been made to feel inferior. that summer i got to talk with alot of good people. people like john bertrand, alan payne, I am sorry but i cannot remember the guy who steered victory83. all 3 of them( i am not including terry mclaughilin, he was canadain) was freindly and very helpfull.
the second time was in san diego, during a cup defense. i was with a friend and he just ignored us. like we did not belong. normaly I like most people. there are only a few i dislike, he just happend to be the one. I will not argue that you may like him or that others may like him. I happen to think that cris dickson is one of the best ac skippers ever. and most people dont even like him rather than think he is half decent. but that is ok. everybody has the right to have an opinion. if dc wants to respond to this. and argue with me. that is also his right. he can join the group here.
sorry if i step on some toes, but that is how i feel

Longbord&Cougar!
I agree with Longbord. Dennis is a sensitive person. Like all good sailors. Jesper Bank is so sensitive that he can feel a windshift approaching with his ears. That’s why you always see good sailors keeping one of their ears perpendicular to the prevailing winddirection.

has anybody heard stories about other famous america cup skippers? now I agree that my opinion is my own. AND should never be taken as the truth. I have heard many poeple tell me that cris dickson is a bad guy. russell coutts is just a posterboy. dean barker could not steer a grocery cart. do i believe all of it. of corse not. but we have alot of kiwis on this forum. this small isalnd has produced some good sailors. what do you know?
I only met cris dickson once. but he made an impact, he was friendly and outgoing. he talked to me like i was his eqaul. that is why i like him.

Sir, I would respectfully suggest that personal opinions of other sailors, full size or model size whom we may, or may not, know intimitely, would serve no useful purpose on this, or indeed any other forum and should be discouraged.:mes::verymad::kiss:[LEFT]

Hi!
We have lost focus. All good sailors are sensitive, but as always, sponsors and trustees demands more than that. The 12-metre “Hippo” is the best ever. I think she was designed by Ian Howlett. The metre-rule does not allow any concavities above waterline. But below it is free. In the front she hade a hippo like apperance. She showed bursts of speed at the 12-metre World Championship in Lule?, Sweden. Had the crew got more time to tune her…

Not according to the Brits. The Hippo, or Crusader II as she was officicially named, was passsed over and they elected to race Crusader, a rather conservative development of Australia II, in the 87 challenger series. The skipper, Harold Cudmore, felt he could do better in a more conventional boat. Either way the Hippo was interesting, as well as kind of ugly. Booster, do you have any more details?
