10R formula confusion

Im pretty sure I have read thoroughly through the 10R rules. I found the formula to be R=LxSx8, where R is not greater than 10, L is the measured waterline and S is the measured area of the sails and the spars. But no where did I see anything that stated the units required for the measurements. It seems to me that it would have to be in meters, b/c thats the only way mutliplying 3 numbers, 1 of them being 8 will come out with anything close to 10. If you have any insight or knowledge please let me know. Thanks alot.

Andrew -
email Mark Gee the class secretary, via the AMYA website. He can/will provide you with the finer points on how the formula works. Great guy by the way !

why dont you talk to dan. he is starting his 3r class. basicly a smaller version . i am thinkning that what goes for the 3r, should go for the 10r. but i agree with dick. if dan can answer go right to the source

I had always used:

LxS
7500 = 10 or less

using inch measurements.

I ran a couple of converted metric dimensions through the LxSx8 and they came out close, but not exact.

[:-mouse]Yes Larry is correct.[:-sick]
The formula in inches is Waterline length times measured sail area divided by 7500.[:-skull]
Thus if you use a Marblehead hull with 50 inch waterline you may have up to 1500 square inches of sail area.[:-snorkel]
If on the other hand you choose to have a longer waterline say 60 inches then you may only have 1250 sq in. [:-sonar]
The great thing about this class is that it is largely unrestricted as regards rig type, draft etc.[:-tophat]
Boats may be designed for specific conditions as to their sailing sites.
That is a subject for a whole new thread.[:-weepn]

Solid wing sails, uni-rigs, double-luff mains, multiple-element sails, rotating spars, …

Easssssssyy there big fellah… watch that blood pressure… save that for this winter when you are measuring snow… get out there and have some FUN IN THE SUN… That Viagra commerical says that can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure… now… I would not know anything about that… TV wouldn’t lie.?? would it?[:D]

I could be wrong (for the 1st time [:D]) but I think the formula was converted to metric from the previous english measures when the AMYA decided to adopt the international rules for the class.

OK Here is the link to the Ten Rater Rule, Spool down to Part III APPENDICES,
Section H-- Rating. All will be made clear.

For those too lazy to go there, in metric form the formula is LxSx8
