Until AA batteries become unavailable for routine use, I do favour the idea that we should continue with the existing set of rules. If, in the future, a new power source becomes more readily available, then we should seriously consider changing the rules.
I can visualize a photocell material on plastic that is sufficiently flexible and light that the sails can be made from it, so dispensing entirely with batteries. What then? A “Sun-driven Footy”?

Why carry luggables when lighter weight alternatives already exist at competitive prices? I guess that Rod just likes a heavy, tender boat.
Besides, “AA retention” sounds like a condition to be refered to a doctor.

For the sake of commonality with the rest of my RC hobbies, I just built a 5-cell AAA, NiMHd pack that I charge the night I sail. This works for me quite well. But at the same time, I don’t race my boat either.
