Wis: YOU should care about performance if you care at all about money, time, and effort because you’ll be wasting all that if you’re not carefull!
Why would you even want a multihull that wasn’t high performance? You can sail slow with a mono with no chance of pitchpole or capsize; do you have a kayak or other rescue boat?
You could buy three pieces of two by four and have a trimaran but you probably wouldn’t be happy with it.
The poorer the design the less speed and and greater chance of bad handling and winding up upside down.
Think about why you want a multihull…
My first boat was a Seawind from Kyosho…and you know what…I luv that boat!! now I got a 36/600…but I still prefer my SW…and yes I do have a rescue boat…as I said, the only electric boat on the AMYA site!..it has enough power to handle both my SW and the 36/600.
Now, what I do with MY money, should only concern me! of course if you want to sponsor me[;)]…I am very open-minded to any talks
Wis, I’m not trying to discourage you: multihulls can be great fun! But I am trying to encourage you to look realistically at the challenges involved.
For instance, if I understood you correctly you said you had an electric powered radio controlled rescue boat. Well, it will be of ZERO use to you with an upside down F48 cat or tri with a full rig sticking straight down 6 or 7 feet!! You absolutely will need a boat that you can get into to go get the multihull-no if ands or buts.
Another thing: you MAY be able to put buoyancy at the top of the mast to prevent turtling depending on the boats weight but if you use multiple rigs forget it! The mast becomes too short for a practical amount of buoyancy. What about the wind drag from mast mounted bouyancy? Are these tips on the plans you’ll buy? Will the person you buy the boat from tell you how to mount the buoyancy and how much? And when you’re out in the boat which way you need to pull the boat to get it upright with the least problem?
You’ve got to understand that for years I sailed “normal” rc multihulls and had great fun. Then I was introduced by Dr. Bradfield to hydrofoils and I was simply stunned by the performance of his foiler:its incredible stability stood out more than anything else to me BECAUSE of my past experience…
you can simply forget about capsize/ pitchpole.
If you decide to do “GHOST TRAIN” - let me know, as I have some drawings from a Brazil website that does a nice job explaining the build process. Will send you free via email. I had a girl at work translate, but she found it was Portugese - not Spanish. But you can work from the drawings.
Dick
Would you be able to send me these drawings etc, as I am about to start building a Ghost Train, and any info would be helpful.
