Schooner "America" refit

That makes a lot of sense.

ok…it took a few “barley sodas” to get up the nerve to drill holes in the deck for the fair leads and sheet guides.

Man I hope everything is in the right spot.

Fingers crossed here ! LOL

back from a vacay, and got busy. made two new IOM suits/rigs and did a final standing rigging set up. complete with paper sails and booms

Well it sails… With no boom vangs and the resulting loss of control of the leech is frustrating. might have to do something about that.

Also even with nearly 45* of rudder travel it handled like a garbage scow… it felt like it had some weather helm. big turning radius, I mean huge.

So this is what my process will be to fix

  1. redesign the rudder horn to get more travel (tight space though)
  2. make a bigger rudder
3 carve out a section on the aft end of the keel and install a balanced rudder

paint this week on the hull…
and I may cut back on the aft sail to work out some of the weather helm…

that really looks nice. As I recall, it has a full length keel that sticks down. If so, that might be the reason it is “sluggish” to rudder input changes. Just a thought.

yeah the full keel from fore to aft doesn’t help that for sure…
