What thickness is the mylar you made your sails from and where did you get it? I’ve been trying to find 1 or 2 mil mylar and have completely struck out.
Don
Yes the same thing happens with blocks. I’m not sure if it will go away. Maybe if the adhesive relaxed a bit.
Don
In fact this is what should be done when you are using tissus rolled-up
‘memory effects’ ; but under wind pressure this problem disappears.
claudio
The mylar I’m using is 60 microns (or so I was told), and got in a specialized store of plastic, fiber and related material. They normally carry both 48 and 60 microns. It has a plastic, translucid appereance. Sorry but that’s as much information as I can give, given that it is the first time I use this material.
I’ll try to measure the thickness by putting several layers together and then measuring them and divide the result thickness by the number of layers. (Stupid question, 60 microns refer to the thickness? If so, I’ll look pretty dumb, won’t I?)
1Micron= 1/1000 mm. 60 microns is what I would like to find. Is there any possibility that you could find out who the stores supplier is?
Don
Never mind I just ran 60 microns through a conversion an it is about .0025". I can get .003"
My sails are 1200mm long. If I put my stripes at 25%,50% and 75% my camera has to be at least 400mm from the top. Does it mess up your system or should I move my top stripe or do you want the stripes at the seams. Sorry to be a pain but I don’t want to slow things down,
Don
Hi Don
No problem!
Yup, always alternate the panels.
BTW, the day job is sending me away for three or four days, may not be able to check the thread for a while…
Day job! You’re going to have to get your priorities straight, Lester. I do think that we could all rest our brains for a couple of days though.
Don
Well, while some are “resting” hidden in their day jobs this is what I’ll be doing…
This is the jib for the Luna Rossa I’ve talk about…
I’m still cutting the patterns, and don’t decide yet on whether to do it with Mylar on the high stress areas (foot and luff) and florist celofen on the rest or completely in mylar… suggestions?
I know that maybe doing it in a radial cut is overkill, but it looks soooo coool, I can’t resist…
File in dxf format, zipped and virus free…
I can’t open it, Marino. What program is it? Oh, while we’re talking software, Claudio, what program were you and Lester using for the test bench pictures?
Don
Do you have sailcut?
Actually Lester suggest the Accumeasure of UK sail
than can be free downloaded here :
http://www.ukhalsey.com/newsletter/april04/index.asp
personnally never used before but apparently easy to use as seen. You can download also the instructions manual.
Meanwhile here the sail jig almost complete , missing the camera support , the adjust lenght bar and the sail.
Sailcut was used to establish the table parameters among others sources.
Claudio
Here’s the jib in Sailcut format. Zipped and virus free.
I do have SailCut 4 but after Unzip I can open the file - (.sc3) format not identified.
Claudio
Strange, extension should be .saildef …
I’m using version 1.1 (sailcut 5) maybe that’s the problem. Could you open the .dxf I posted earlier?
In any case, latest sailcut version is free at http://sailcut.sourceforgenet.net
Marino
I had Sailcut but I wasn’t using it so I dumped it. I found that all I was getting was an outline which I could do faster by hand. I had printing issues. As the bottom panels were to big for 8 1/2 x 11 paper it split them in half. With paper stretch and printer slippage the halves would rarely line up. Once I found sail blocks for broadseaming I couldn’t see the need for Sailcut.
Claudio
The program I was refering to was the one you used to make the drawing of the frame you just posted. I’ll try to find a link.

Don
Looks nice, but you havn’t built in any draft?
Regards from Berlin
Joachim
Draft will be induced using the method being discussed here… the idea is to build the three horizontal panels and putting these together with Claudio’s machine, using Lester’s spreadsheet and everybody else’s comments and suggestions…
Marino
I managed loading Sailcut 5 - only one drawing seen.
For this exercise, You should using SailCut 4 and not SailCut 5 that is dedicated to Surf Sailing only
