THAT WAS MORE THAN A YEAR AGO.ALL I HAVE OF HER ARE THE PHOTOS AND MEMORIES
HOW DO I TAKE PHOTOS? NIKON F100 WITH 200MM ZOOM, A WELL BALANCED BOAT, AND A NECK STRAP FOR THE TRANSMITTER.
To Express 27, I was based out of DTW for a couple of years and lived on lake St.Claire just off… I think it was 27 mile road (right behind the Kentucky Fried Chicken joint) the main street into/out of New Baltimore. Had a great time sailing on that lake, and it did have some monster winds. I still have an EC-12 up there somewhere that I left when I moved back home. Ice boaters do some serious speed during the Winter as well. I had a Graham Bantock “Strad” Marblehead out last weekend with an A rig in 20 kts, and it was screaming. I was getting the bow under too much to be efficient, but the reaches were blistering.
For heavy air I prefer the old standby Santa Barbara,(or it’s illegitimate brother the Half-Meter) born in Southern California specifically for the surf, it handles waves and chop in the harbor or at the beach better than anything I have sailed to date. The boat is intentionally underpowered, so the normal “A” rig would almost serve as a “B” rig on anything else.
Nope… not the fastest boat on the pond under any conditions… but there is the rub, ANY conditions are good for that boat. I have always wanted to see someone put together a long distance R/C race that would cover and extreme amount of distance over a period of several days and require the skipper to transport along with the boat. The S/B would be a good trooper for such an event.
Well,
sailing in strong winds is very nice, especially when your boat is watertight. Luckily mine was, until some stupid dutch sailor, let’s call him Menno ;-), tried to sail through my proud “Flow”.
But a big problem was made small by putting a bit of Bison combi-power on it.

Had to choose between a brick wall or another IOM
However it demonstrates the superior structural integrety of the bow. Maybe this is one of the reasons IOM’s tend to have silicon bow bumpers…
Keep on racing in strong winds
