Damn, ESPN has the right to the 35th AC!?? That means we’ll only get to see racing ONLY if there isn’t a tennis match, golf game, boxing rerun, or bass fishing tourney at the same time…
And we’re paying for the opportunity to see first-hand, real-time, live racing.
The AC.com people kept their word, in giving a gratis subscription for the Gothenburg event. I was able to watch the video replay without buying a subscription.
If you haven’t seen the Gothenburg racing, you should watch it; it has some good sailing and edge-of-your-seat suspense.
sorry not going to pay for something that was free last time… It does nothing to help the publicity of the sport to keep it under wraps. I still haven’t been able to watch it free through any of the SA sites…
I’ve been watching the ACWS on my tablet computer, but I think there is a PC viewer too? Has anyone tried the PC viewer, and is it working well?
I asked the Android application developer when they will have the Liveline simulator working, as we liked using that along with the live video via AC.com…
Obamacare has a tax added to just about everything we buy- gas, airline tickets, sporting goods, aspirin…
OTOH- he likes to throw ‘rock star’ type parties, so maybe he’ll get Jimmy drunk or wacked-out on pills, just to make the U.S. team look st00pid or show off t the home-town crowds.
On the second race, Artemis accidentally ran over a judges boat just before crossing the starting line, trapping it between the two hulls (no one was hurt) and the forward part of the bowsprit broke off! The officials allowed them enough time to do some repairs, to reattach the jib to the end of the broken bowsprit, and re-started the race. I bet everyone though Artemis would go like a slug, but the first few legs proved otherwise. the damn thing actually got a lot faster! They gained over just about every leg, and got a 1. On the third race, they didn’t have much luck, but got a 3. Because of the double-points, Artemis got the first for Bermuda.
I’ve been watching some of the video feeds, photos of the event site, and Google Earth, and can not see how they will be able to compare this event to thte one in SF. There seems to be no public area close to the race course, and limited lodging on the entire island. If you charter a boat, you may be able to get out to the course. All in all, I think I will save my money and watch on the internet. Maybe the next one will be held in a nice location!
A friend in my club says that he watched he replays of Portsmouth and Gothenburg on YouTube. I told him it’s not possible without paying a fee, but he insists that it was the free YouTube stuff. I suppose what he saw was some highlights or partial replays.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kl9owjkY2Y I found this for bermuda which is most of the racing. but I’ve not yet found anything for any other race except just the highlights and random clips…
If this is what we are going to expect for the AC in 2017, its gonna suck
the racing in bermuda for the 45s is good dumb luck for artemis to run into the judges boats and come back to win the race…
I know I’m a cheap bastard…If I really wanted to watch it I’d pay for it…
IMO, the judges boat ran into Artemis- they were trying to be too close to the action, and literally got caught up in things. I figured after that, all the boatbuilders will be grabbing the poqer saws to shorten then bowpoles, or at least reconfigure them so you can put on the right length pole for the course conditions, like you would select a jib or genoa.
Marc - I don’t think you will miss much. Better to try to find/watch the C Class Challenge (Little America’s Cup) as personally knowing a few of the team members, and realizing they are on the bleeding edge without a lot of big sponsorship support, I find what they are doing and trying to be, much more interesting and exciting. Add in that one of the sailing team members from Canada (“Blunted”) is/was also an r/c sailor improves my idea of what it is all about. I suppose one can get a little excited about watching the big boats being driven (not sailed) around a course but I prefer to watch the home tinkering guys come up with ideas that may eventually be grabbed by the larger sized multihulls and suddenly everyone is in awe. Only later to find one or two C Class teams has been using the idea for one or two campaigns. Right now - in my opinion - the C Class or the A Class are the multihulls I would enjoy watching. Perhaps it’s because I raced in close to those size boats. In either case, the big multis are more aligned to ESPN than they are to the everyday multihull racer. Likewise, watching one guy manage a Laser Class National win was always more interesting to me than watching a couple of the AC monohulls with a paid crew, a skipper who may (or may not) have been a resident of the country for which he was racing, and a big amount of hot air and over-inflated egos. The current AC racing in foiling multihulls will, in my opinion, be the downfall of an interesting race for the public, let alone the knowledgeable sailing public.
… And during the last AC they were saying this is how things will be going with the new boats that are really fast, the new race formats, and all the media coverage.
They just didn’t mention it would cost the fans a fortune.
