1.2.3. - "esterel"

Just so everyone is on the same page, Claudio presented me this interesting chart on M-Class sail area ratios during one of our recent PM discussions.

What it shows is that as wind speed increases, rigs on M-Class have reduced sail area while the ratio of sail areas also change. Swing rig jibs ratio increases from 22% area to 30% and classic rigs jibs go 32% to 50%, which is the complete opposite of what we thought coming from big boat experiences.

one possibility to introduce the boom OFFSET and transferring the main adjustment to the end of boom being the Wang fixed.

My sympathies to all suffering at the moment the consequences of ‘natural disaster’ in the States without forgetting the biggest earthquake of few days ago in Queen Charlotte island close to Vancouver. Hope Don, Hew and all I forgot are OK !
Cheers to All

Wash DC is doing ok… lost power for a 12 hours or so, got 12inches of rain in 48 hours… and some wind. spent a fair amount of time at work. we had crews working on split 12 hours shift to maintain 24 hour coverage…clean up going to take some time…

We are fine on the west coast. . .the earthquake did very little damage. My house is about 200 miles from epicenter and it was not felt.

John

there was an earthquake??? :stuck_out_tongue:

Fine John happy to know it, but Don is much closer since in Vancouver !
Yes Marc, and one of the biggest this year see : http://www.oe-files.de/gmaps/eqmashup.html
This Map, in real time, is allays on my desk top !

we had a 4.2 last year…about 90 miles away scary when a building mooves

Don and I both live on Vancouver Island. He lives 50 miles closer to the quake than me. The quake was 7.7 with many aftershocks over 6.0

John

Hi all from north west,
happy to hear that apparently only relative little damages observed.
With similar earthquake amplitude of 7.7, here in Nice, we couldn’t tell the same thing ! All constructions are in brick and concrete and probably 99% of them are without anti seismic suspensions. Last spring our 5 floor building was oscillating for less then 1 minute for only 4.5 amplitude and hearing cracks from the walls. Was really scary !! The third time in 12 years !
Get well

Today was one of the nice days in Nice with almost 23°C on the balcony after a week of stormy weather.
Was good time to go out and run my elbow to finish polishing the other half of the hull.
Mirror Glaze 16 wax used. Standby for 6 hours every coat.

Thanks for the concern Claudio. We were in the hot tub and never even felt the earthquake although some neighbours did. Really a non-issue here.
Don

Hi Don ,
nice to get good news from your side !

It take time with Mirror Glaze 16 !
Today completed the fifth wax coat, another two to finish up !

Claudio,

Bet it’s an absolute swine to wax & polish in the bow area!! Just out of interest, is there any particular reason you’re allowing 6 hours between applications? All the Meguiars literature that I’ve come across all recommend the initial application and then buff when hazed (approx 5 - 10 mins). Then wait an additional 20 - 30 mins before applying the next coat, with the process being repeated until you’ve built up 5 - 8 coats. I’d have thought that with your relatively high ambient temperatures (compared to here - struggled to get above 7 celsius today) the time required for the wax to ‘cure’ is probably even quicker than those recommended by Meguiars.

Other than that, looking good.

Regards,

Row

Hi Row,
Not easy in the bow, but I manage.
About wax, there are two different data on the box, one as you said by Meguiar’s and the other added by the French supplier that recommend 6 hours from one coat to the other and final super shining after the last coat.
So here I’m one coat per day !
Outside is variable from 13°C in the morning up to 20°C at 2 pm , but not all days !
I’m not in a rush anyhow.
Cheers

ESTEREL-2

Finally after a small deviation in the footy camp, I decided to come back to the ESTEREL project.

As already mentioned, I will use two different external coatings for two different hulls.
The 1st will be made with transparent Gel-coat + Cadmium pigments .

Later the 2nd hull will be using as first coat the epoxy resin loaded (slightly) with silica with the aim to reduce the micro craters visible at the end of the polymerization. This what has been suggested by a technician working with a specialized company for composites.

Both methods, of course, will imply an increased weight for the lamination process. In order to compensate the gel-coat weight, instead of using 3 layers of 105g/m², I will use only 2 layers. The gel-coat layer, while kept to the minimum, is still providing some strength.

The transparent gel coat is already mixed with pigment: 180g gel coat resin + 5.3g cadmium powder.
The product after careful mixing are now resting for some 24H to allow good mix and air bubbles exit

The mold received an additional of mirror glaze wax coat.

The glass tissues are already cut.

Before applying the gel coat, the catalyzer weight will be based upon the weight of resin + the added pigment
