1.2.3. Esterel-2

As RC Model Designer, I fix at priori, as all designers do, the characteristics of the model I intend to build. Of course the parameters are not falling from the sky !
for the Esterel 1.2.3. the initial basic idea was to build a model of that size for 4000g with a tolerance of 50g.
All the story is discussed in the tread. Unfortunately due to wrong construction choices I managed to reach an overweight of 150g
This fact is destroying the initial assumptions and as a such the expected conditions and consequently the performances are jeopardized.
Of course all is not lost, because even with what happen I found the design rather good and for sure there is still a good margin for improvement.
All is now up to me to select the best construction method that will give strength and lightness to reach the specifications.
One of my trial was exerted with the mold design for the Esterel-Footy.
This technique will be used also with the Diamond under construction.
There is common point and this is the weight of the main servo. Two options Arm-servo or Winch-servo. The RMG is a very suitable servo but is still too heavy. I Have to find a way to gain weight in order to allow the use of a RMG 170g against 65g of an Arm servo.
There is another point that consist in having some ballast weights to be positioned inside the hull to counteract the pitching oscillations.
As you can see there is a lot of considerations that shall enter the 4000g for a boat length of 123cm !
Cheers
Claudio

PS :
I got the impression that you may speak French, where are you coming from ?

Well Thank You Claudio,

As always, engineering and weight. I do appreciate your posts and read all of them in this Thread as well as that of the other regular posters. This site very nice and clean.

Regarding your Winch decisions. Im sure you are very thorough but there are some new servos out from Hi-tech. They are digital and can be programmed for most any length(degree) of travel up to 180 degrees, either by the hobbyist or the factory. The case is made from Aluminum and Plastic to dissipate heat better. Best of all are the weight to torque ratios. The most powerful of them has up to 44 kg./cm. and only weighs in at 76 grams. One more suitable for a Marble head might only weigh in at 68 grams. I will be using one of these servos for my new Soling 50 project. http://hitecrcd.com/products/servos/ultra-premium-digital-servos/hs-7950th-ultra-torque-hv-coreless-titanium-gear-servo/product They are only a few mm’s larger than a standard sized servo. What happened to electronics is amazing these days with 2.4ghz transmitters and super servo performance.

Regarding being French in nationality. I am a native Californian, with some French Ancestry. If you have ever sailed in San Diego, Ca., then we may have met once or twice back 10 or 15 years at Regatta.

The Internet is such a great place to share the Model Yachting lifestyle. Looking forward to more of your progress report on all your projects.

Thanks,
David

Bonjour David,
recently has been put on the market several RMG ‘clones’ made in Italy. I still be waiting to see how much they are reliable, the weights are around 130g

I went several times in San Diego in the 80’s and 90’s, but only for business with C.O.I. in La Jolla . I wonder if they are still there and dealing with carbon-honeycomb panels.
I like introducing arguments for RC sailing model construction. I found pity that among all, the sails, are not discussed although being the engine of sailing boats.

salutations

I just received via email that link : http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=18743
I wonder what can be obtained for 17$ !

you could buy 10 RMG’s…

I have one of these. but I have not put it in a boat yet…

I think if go into with the idea that its going to be “disposable” Ie buy a spare winch to have around and make it so its easily swappable its not a hateful idea. Claudio, since you build so many boats, to you build it sail it, and the move the electronics into another boat, or do you keep the boat fully rigged with electronics? If you keep the boat fully rigged with electronics, this could cut some of the cost down…

Hi Marc,
you means 1/10 RMG’s
My models are often experimental one and once tested they join the others on the walls. I recover most of the times the electronics and sail are stored only if pertaining to a Class like M or RG65.

yeah you are right Claudio. English is only my first language  Yeah you could by 10 Vigors or one RMG…

personaly, if you move the equipment from boat to boat. buy the best stuff you can afford…

Hi Marc,
is not only for me, when I design a model, I also think about the others that would like to build it.
Of course if the Vigor is attractive for price I would like to say the same thing for the performances !
The Italian new brand are very promising !
I shall wait…

When I saw this vid about Wild Oats X1 secrets made me think of your project Claudio …talk about a Swiss Army Knife appendages :reyes:

//youtu.be/yPlAWsmITBg

wow this is complicated - I can see the reason for them though I tend to like simple but that is definitly the most complicated setup I have seen - mainly the horizontal foiler which would increase stability for a narrow boat like this on the run which is where I suspect they use this appendice ?

Can’t really see that in our boats though wouldn’t be surprise to see a boat one day with that setup !

G

It may work at scale 1:1 where the speed is sufficient to produce some effects. At much lower speed with our models I do have serious doubts while drags may develop more.
CD

the added weight, the added complication to make it work for probably more drag - for sure !
